Trouble starting

cb125s. running total loss. New plug, new coil, new fully charged battery, not long run in off a rebuild. It's only push start so when ever I try to push start it, it fires but doesn't take off and just stops as the bike slows to a stand still. Gas in the carb, has a spark. The carb idle speed screw thingy has been messed around with but I'm not sure if that's why it's not starting but I can't tell which is the right setting if it wont even run to start with. Any idea's on why it's not running? I have only cut some wire out since I last had it running, taken the coil off and charged the battery but the wire was soldered back together fine and the coil can only be hooked up one way which I have done. I can only think of it being the carb or the electrical system so it's not quite in either category so move it mods if you think it should go in either.

You need someone there who can show you the way around a point ignition system first hand.
If it is the Idle mixture screw that has been fucked with try 2 turns out as a stareting point.
If it is the speed screw (opens the throttle a bit) you should be able to guess that with a bit of pising about.

I've been trying for a few days doing quarter turns of the screw from full out and it really makes not much difference, because it just won't change. The spark seems weak but I can't work out why. Points are clean, spark plug is new, coil is new ish and worked fine last time. Does the coil have to be grounded by the bolts to work well? Because the coil is only on by one bolt and has had the bracked cut welded and painted since last time it ran which is the only thing I can come up with... Either that or just buy the cb twin off trademe for $400 that is running well and looks to be competitive for pretty cheap, rather then mess about with this one screwing my head in because I'm useless mechanically and don't really have anyone around here to show me how its done. The cb twin only actually works out to be $90 cheaper then what I have spent on this bike. What do ya reckon

I think you will just end up in the same place you are with your current bike at some point anyway.
So you may aswell get this one working nice.
It will be somthing simple.

Con someone old who is good with these things to have a look and a play and listen to everything they say and do.
The skills to play with these things usually take a bit of time and patience to aquire but are well worth the pissing about to learn.
When you do find out what is wrong you may have to kick yourself because it is somthing simple as.
Buckets (esp the classic type like you have) are a huge learning experience in riding and mechanical skill, I'm tested every time I get close to one but if you think of it as a positive skillbuilding experience you will learn 'Bucket loads'.
While it can be frustrating at the time you are stuck on somthing the sitting down with a cold beer after you have got it all sorted is an amazing payoff feeling

I've done the whole screwing around learning stuff thing before, and it can be good when you are making progress: But when you just end up spending more and more money, about to only have a couple hours to do stuff between school and sleep and will have 3 of four weekends a month gone to work, it doesn't seem worth it for a bike that shows no sign of life after pushing it up and down the sloped drive day after day dripping in sweat... Sorry if I sound like a wanker (prob am lol ) but it's really doing my head in. I thought about just giving it to a shop to do but it's actually going to use up the cost difference from that T in maintanance and then I've only got a single, not a twin. Unless there is anyone around the Hauraki area that could come and have a look at it for me free of charge?
