    Anyone got Vodem?

Anyone in Auckland have vodem and want to go for a ride out to Wainui?

i dont have a land line anymore and need internet.. but we need to know about coverage. according to the map I'll have 3G extended coverage, but we need to test it before we get it because there's no return option.

    Please

will pay gas if you're not too far away lol *is cheap*

    Please and thank you

There is a return option. Plenty folk around here have returned theirs. 3g? I can't even make bloody voice calls in most of this area.

Another thought. Have you checked whether you can get 'naked DSL' from your exchange?

    Give Orcon a call.

Check you acutally get a 3G connection when it hooks up. Vodyfone's 3G coverage maps are optimistic to say the least. Anything else is a waste of time for all but basic email. Naked DSL down there...I wouldn't even bother looking.

Other options are Wimax (probably not yet available there), kordia wireless (possibly available) or satellite (most likely available unless you've got a mountain in front of ya!).

I wouldn't be surprised if it managed a 3G connection.

'Down there'? You sure you got the right location in mind? Be worth checking out, I reckon. Not sure about the OP's comprehension level, though.

I would seriously consider Telecom's T stick or whatever they call it.

Vodafone's rep told one of my customers the Vodem would be brilliant as a backup in Parnell, after all, it was one of their primary areas.

Well, half the time it couldn't get a connection, and when it did, it was trumped by the Telecom one in reception and speed. Same machinery, same position, minutes apart. I'm not a fan of Telecom nor do I normally recommend them straight away, but you have to grudgingly respect their set up. Its quicker and better...

Odds are, the Telecom one will have better coverage every time, and I know Zapf tests his in some out of the way places.

I get better Vodem reception/bandwidth (full 3G) in Taupo than I do in Parnell (albeit in the Saatchi & Saatchi building at the bottom of the hill). Actually, it's probably not a signal quality issue, more a bandwidth issue to the cell site, I suspect.

Just don't ever try using one in Wainuiomata.

Wouldn't be surprised. I don't have a vodem, but I did use the pcmcia data card for a few years, and I've since moved to just using the phone as a modem (less shit to carry). Tried accessing the Vodafone network a year or so ago just up the hill from Parnell, and was having pings into the thousands

Data card did work in Whakamaru, but GPRS... welcome back to dialup (remote access is sooooo fun at those speeds )

Well, yeah, but hey, even if it's at dial-up speed outside of main towns, it's pretty handy having internet access anywhere in the country that a Vodafone mobile can pick up reception.

You don't travel very much then do you? There's many places in NZ where you don't get a vodafone signal full stop.....never mind GPRS. When GPRS is down to 2KB per second and fading in and out then you're quicker with dialup.

My bad..... :-) Thought it was near Whakatane.

If everyone in Parnell complains to the local authority that the vodafone coverage there is poor, they stand more chance of getting another cell put in.

As it is, when a cell phone company tries to put a new one in a residential area, people complain, and they can't get consent. Hence coverage is shit.

    Can't have it both ways.
It's only when you take the piss out of a partially shaved wookie with an overactive 'me' gene and stapled on piss flaps that it becomes a problem.
