We stayed at Anchor Lodge when a group of us did it a couple of years ago:
http://www.anchorlodgecoromandel.co.nz/ those who wanted to could do the back packer thing and at the same complex those who wanted to could do the full motel thing.

We wandered down the road to the Admirals Arms for dinner, they did a great job. I think there was 18 of us, they pushed tables together, got all the orders right (even though some people changed their order several times), the food all came out within minutes of each other and was good value for money, the tab was individualised ready for us each to pay our bit.

As I'm typing this I'm surprised we haven't been back yet.

The Tapu (TUI) Tavern is a watering hole which has been accredited as "Shafty approved".
