    Calling all ZX9R 94-97 Owners

    I have a 1994 ZX9R motor that is being installed into an off-roader. I have tried dam near everything to get even a miserable little spark out of it but no success. Have even bought a another second hand CDI unit for it. If there is anyone out there with a running ZX9R 94-97 that would be willing to swap their known good cdi with my unknowns and give their bike a flick of the key and see if you have any joy, it would be very much appreciated. Would throw a little your way for your time and effort if you wish as well.

    it may not be the cdi. did you use the standard ignition switch or just wire it up to an on/off switch. on the 1999 zx9r, we had to do something extra to junk the ignition switch (it was a race bike), otherwise the bike wouldn't run at all.

    there is a trick to get around that but i won't post here because it may help someone to hot wire a bike.

    Just out of curiousity - where did you get the engine and how much did it set you back?

    Best of luck with getting it all to run.

    portokiwi, Do you still have the CDI for it? Is it a 94-97? I'm sure the insurance company wouldn't miss it!

    As for wiring it up the only factory wiring is the cdi plugs and bits of wire from the plugs. As far as i could tell there is not much to it from the wiring diagram. I'll try post up a diagram of it on monday and see if anyone can help. for some strange reason there appears to be two +ve wires. Also a wire from the starter button which seems to be for activating the fuel pump possibly? Also someone may be able to put me wrong but the wire that goes to the CDI through 3 diodes from the Neutral switch, side stand and clutch has to be earthed? Thats the way it appeared to me.
    Engine was $750 which included the wiring, carbs, headers and an old radiator which will do the job. Supposedly it has only done 20,000Km. Was in Palmy.

    So sounds like the problem might be solved. dickytoo had a similar problem with a later model race bike. Was solved by splicing in a 1/4watt 100ohm resistor in the grey wire. This is supposed to be an anti theft measure so if a thief was to cut the ignition wires and wire them all together, 12v would be put down the grey wire instead of a reduce voltage (around 5-10V) caused by the resistor, which is built into the ignition barrel. Makes sense now that there are two +ve wires going to the cdi.
    If only Kawasaki could have been kind enough to include it in their schematics!
    Will try it out tonight and tell you how it goes.
