WANTED! VFR400 or RVF400

Hi all,

time for me to move on from my CBR and quite keen on VFR/RVF400's

have around 4500 cash + my CBR at the moment so if anyones got something and is interested in a trade or whatever let me know.

would like something less than 50,000kms

Seriously mate, you can do better for that money. There's sod all good VFR's and RVF's left, as most have been treated rather poorly in the name of making them perform or look "better".

Sell the CBR for 1 million dollars because that's what 200 year old 250s seem to go for and buy something really sweet. 10k will see you on a huge range of awesome machinery that was made after 2000 and with 1 or 2 owners and very little kms.

I bought my VFR for exactly $4,500 with just 12,000km on it, in good nick from a dealer (warranty and all). So you can ignore Jim2 up there, he's just old.

Go for it mate - these little V4's are the perfect bike for NZ, and there's plenty of decent ones around. Plus they're bloody reliable to boot. Look forward to seeing you on one, and don't forget to join our social group!

thanks for the tip James Deuce, but unfortunatly im on a pretty tight budget and cant get a loan to take me upto 10k as we have just had a baby so one imcome is supporting the family at the moment.
Maybe once Jane goes back to work i might be able to spend a little more.
If you have some suggestions of other bikes around my price range im more than willing to look.

You have $4.5k plus the CBR. Sell the CBR. Start at $6.5k and take $5.5k. It's what they go for.

There's your $10k and a reliable recent bike. When you're in the position you're in, you don't need to be trying to keep someone else's dead horse on the road.

Ah, sorry Aer0 but I'm afraid mine was rear-ended by a dickhead Hyosung rider recently. Long story short it has worked out most favourably, my VFR will be becoming a track bike as soon as I buy myself a nice new second VFR (one for the road, one for the track). You'll find that you can get some mint NC30 VFRs for 6-7k, and there are plenty more decent examples with low k's below that that have been sold over the last few months.

There's also no need to spend every cent you have just buying a bike. It's much more fun to buy a bike then still have the coinage left over to personalise it a bit, or save towards another bike. There's no need to go straight to the "big", expensive bikes straight away either. Plenty of fun can be had by those of us with more realistic budgets, or who don't feel the need to overcompensate with cc's.

And of course there are a plethora of parts available for them. Other options could be a ER6, 600SS, Bandit or RS/RGV. But I know what I'd pick.

I paid $500 less for mine. It turned out to be a dog. Have had nothing but trouble, and I got it at the k's it suffers it's biggest loss in value.

Everyone says thier engines last forever. They're exaggerating, but their engines are very tough. But everything else wears out.

You'll be faaaaarrrrrrkin lucky to get a decent bike for under $5000. Please avoid the misery.

$7000 can get you a bloody nice VFR/RVF. However, it's a lot of money to be spending on an old machine. The engine may be low k's, but seals fade with age as well as use so you might find the fork seals will go, then the shock, then the eletrics will get water in them, etc. It's worthwhile if you're an enthusiast and love the VFR/RVF's and are willing to put the time into fixing the odd thing wrong with them. They are stunning bikes, handling is great, and the sound is the best I've heard from any bike ever.

However, if you're looking for a reliable bike, a brand new ER6N is about $10,000. You get a warranty, and you'll know how it's been looked after. That's what I would do in hindsight since I really needed a workhorse, not a project. Then again, I did seem to get the worst example around.

unfortunatly my 250 is not worth the 5k all the others seem to be selling for.
its a MC19 1989 CBR and its not in the best condition.
ill throw up a few photos and a for sale thread shortly and you will see why.

realisticly i think ill only end up getting 2-3k for it so my bike budget is around 6.5, anything more is a bonus.

Unfortunately we're not comparing apples with apples here. We're comparing apples with caviar - the difference between a $5,000 bike and a $10,000 bike is, oh, $5,000.

Yes, you can get a $10k ER6N, but then you have to add the cost of dealer servicing (without which you'll have no warranty), and the bits and pieces.

Or you can spend $5k on a decent bike (Coyote being the unfortunate exception - he has spent much TLC on his bike and gets little love, whereas all other VFRs I know can be crashed into power poles, off banks, rear-ended at speed and still be perfectly rideable afterwards), and you'll have bulging pockets to deal with anything that might pop up. Owning a '89 bike as you do, you'll essentially be expecting the same maintenance that you already have. VFRs mostly range from '89 to '93 in age. Fork seals, brake pads, tyres, chain etc -they all wear out with time, and this is nothing surprising.

I have a VFR400 that was for sale but i decided to hold on to it a bit longer... but would consider selling again!! GREAT bike (and im not just saying that cos i own one!). I generally ride with 900cc + group and it keeps up no worries, sounds great. has done 22000 km's and well looked after. Yes I am old and I've wasted far too much money on old pieces of munt and never recovered the cost. I also like safe and reliable bikes, but then that's just another symptom of old I guess.

I haven't seen the 5k bike that hasn't needed at least a decent lube of suspension linkages, steering head bearings (and probably re-tensioning), cables lubed, chain and sprockets, and usually the replacement of two tyres due to mismatched wear or profiles or brands/type of tyre. There's an extra $2k in time and materials there over the initial purchase price. There'll be people who decry that (like Bonez - a $5k bike is a luxury item for him), but I bet he spends a lot of time and not a little money making his old pieces of munt nice and reliable to ride.

$2-3K for a CBR? You're being too nice. Put some stickers over the rough bits and sell it for $6k like everyone else does. Do it over TradeMe, preferably to someone in another town. They always look better in photos. Isn't that how everyone sells their 250?

Hi cbr would fetch 3k pending condition anything prior to mx22 is worth sweet FA... yeah some nice toys for 10k, 748 ducatis , 04/05 cbr600rr etc. he better get saving....

Can pick up older r6's for around the 6-7k mark for a carby model
