    New rider

    Hey all

New to the forums, been riding about a month and a half now. Ran into a guy with a CBR250 at Uni, he plugged the site so here I am.

I learned the basics at John Wright's school in Manukau, bought a GPX250 a couple weeks later. She's going well, I've got some mechanical issues but thats another story. Only riding gear I have is an HJC CL14 helmet and an Arjay's textile jacket bought from Motomail a week ago.

Riding is amazing fun, I acquired an E23 7-series BMW and had a lot of fun with her power but after riding it can't even compare. Had a few close calls so far, never thought coming close to being smeared across oncoming traffic could be more exhilirating than terrifying; on a related note I have new appreciation for wind.

So to conclude my introduction, yes, my banana really does dance.

Now...anyone know where to get a good tyre deal in Auckland? Want to get something middle-range, looking for the best deal as I don't really want to spend heaps (she's not a performance machine and I won't be demanding all that much of it).

    Cheers,
    Dev

    Welcome

Welcome to the site Dev. I would suggest getting some decent pants, but when you get to know me, you'll realise that I'm noone to talk on THAT subject

The longer you ride, the more you'll see how fun riding is! Wait till you get your full licence and buy a bigger bike! The performance is almost inconceivable! Especially if you think cars are fast...

Ride safe, and have fun on here.
    Dave

PS: Some of the Aucklanders will answer your tyre question in the morning. Any on here now are most probably pissed, so their advice would be questionable (or is that just Aucklanders in general? )

Leave your sanity at the door and you'll fit right in round here, Dev.

Try Kerry @ Motohaus for a tyre deal. I'm from Hamilton & working night shift, so I'm not a pissed Aucklander.

Yeah, I've met that guy on the CBR250 - he can't ride for shit.

Did you see the state of his bike? It's held together with cable ties for god's sakes! I'm pretty sure he won't last long if he keeps on riding like he does.

Normal jeans are practical for uni, but don't offer much abrasion protection, and no impact protection. For convenience sake I wear Draggin jeans (kevlar lined) with the leather jacket from my two piece suit, as I'm usually late for lectures and don't have the time to change out of leather pants. Plus I think they'd scare the pretty girls.

If you get the chance, go see the custodians and hire a locker as soon as possible, definitely before next week. It's $40 for the year, and although it's not big enough to fit a full face helmet in, you can fit gloves, bike jacket, and bike pants in there. Just chain your helmet to your bike or some such.

Now here's what you need to buy for uni:

    - Pants. Either Draggin jeans if your a lazy prick like that CBR250 rider, or some cordura pants. Cordura will be waterproof, and offer better impact protection and abrasion protection than Draggin jeans.

    - Lock. Auckland Uni tends to have a few bikes nicked from time to time, as students are an apathetic bunch, and steering locks are easily bypassed.

If you have a disc lock, cable or chain, it will make your bike much less tempting than a similar bike parked next to it. Or just crash your bike heaps, so that there are no parts on it left stealing it for.

A disc lock will take up very little space, whereas a cable or chain will allow you to lock your helmet to the bike.

As for tires, I'd suggest a set of pirelli sports demons. I picked up a set from cycletreads for $280 fitted. I can get my knee and peg down on the Wellesley Street > Mayoral Drive left hander and they haven't felt like letting go at all, so they'll be sticky enough for all you'd probably need.

edit: I'm assuming that you've got some gloves, as well as some boots. If not, I think motomail still have a runout on some Teknic gloves, or check around somewhere like Colemans, Cycletreads, Motohaus etc.

Boots are also an essential bit of kit. You don't need to wear $500 race boots to uni, unless your a wanker like me, in which case they are mandatory.

However you need to wear something that'll protect your ankle, and won't fall apart in a crash. Either a pair of m/c boots, or hiking boots will do the job. Wear them to lectures if you don't mind, or ditch them in your locker if you do.

You are forgeting going down to the Op Shop and picking out the lowdest Hawaiian shirt you can find,I don't think you can ride a bike to uni without one.

I'm just questionable in general - don't need alcimahol for that! But then we Aucklanders aren't as strange as the Welly lot, and not as dodgy as the South Islanders!!!

    welcome to the forums agent86,
Im a bit new to riding and here also.

but I did mine at John Wrights too. he is a good guy.
Did he show off his belt buckle heaps? lol

good luck with your bike and uni. nice parking that way.
I dont think youve mentioned it yet but if you dont have gloves then Id highly recommend them, they take a bit of getting used to because the reduce the feeling in your fingers but worth it.
    2 reasons.
    • your fingers get mighty cold after riding for a while
    • if you get thrown off, first thing youll proberly do is put your hands out

    have fun and be safe.
what color are your bike, threads and helmet? ill keep an eye out for you [

Welcome to Kiwi Biker, Agent86! :spudwave:

Don't you have some SecretAgentStuff that will protect you if you bin? And if not, what about the ConeOfSilence, so it at least protects us from the sounds of your screaming if you wipe out?

For tyres, try (in this order) either Kerry at Motomail in Kingsland, Cycletreads, or Mt Eden Motorcycles.
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

It is possible to ride a bike to uni without one. Sometimes I get tired of being mobbed by nubile young women whilst fitting my disc lock, so I'll wear a slightly more understated shirt.

Better put a plug in for my sponsor while I think about it:

I thought that BillyC summed you lot up with his 'Windblown and interesting' line?? Hi there Agent86, you could always use 99 between you and your non-standard landings?
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?
