Dunno if this is relevant, but I had a GN125. Went from chch to taupo and back on it. Avg speed on desert road was 120km/h (good tail wind... both ways) and I managed to get it up to 130ish (tail wind+and long down hill straight = needle off the speedo). It used about a litre of oil and did 30km/l.

Yeah i agree you should go for the GN. They are the perfect learner bike due to the fact that they are to cheap to repair. the indicators and the mirrors are as cheap as chips, which are usually the first to go. Unlike my friends bike. it is this flash brand new racy 150 thing with a full ferring -which is not good for learners. She dropped her bike which broke the mirror. It cost her about $250 to get it replaced.

And its only 580km old. Re the higher top end, wouldnt changing the front sprocket affect it?
Might. Low Hp/wind resistance may mean higher speed is not achieveable by upping the gearing. So all you would achieve is to lower the engine revs for the same top speed
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

I fill mine up every 250 Km for about $9.50. Which is nice and easy to remember, that with city traffic and on the motorway.

hahah that the stupidist thing i've ever heard you'd be better off spending the money on getting a faster bike, unless you have the skills to do it yourself, in which case you probably wouldn't have a gn250

Hi ..i bought a brand new 2004 GN250..I have just been from Auckland to Bluff on it and it never missed a beat. The weather was really shitty and windy..I've had mine up to 120 going up the Bombay Hill...really is economical, and handles brilliantly..just be careful if you buy a new one..$3000.00..mine has rusted & corroded to hell..started within 1 1/2 months & Holeshot won't do anything..Don't get me wrong, I love the bike,it's just it's lokks I hate..ShadeeLady.
