    What real speed looks like.

    Can anybody tell me what seems to be venting from the tail of the Vigilante on take off?

    If you mean while its on the deck ?

    That would be the system that helps it reach take off speed in a short distance (can't remember what its called), but it is operated by steam..

    Yeah I know about the steam catapault but if you check the rear there seems to be some vapour being ejected at high pressure at short intervals even after it's left the deck. I doubt they plumb any of the cat. steam into the aircraft.

    They still are, if they werent so expensive to run and maintain they'd still be flying. I think the RNZAF pilots were the only ones in the world to do aerobatics while hooked up on the refuelling drogue - something pretty special when you think about it.
