Sorry, that was just my comment to Sarge's post. Please ignore - it is not a clue.

Sorry Sully - what was the question?

It looks like steam vapour but I don't know how or why it would vent. Maybe it's a CO2 coolant?

Bugger dude, what makes me laugh there is you probably applied to fly badass gunships before I was born ? (1986), and in 03 I sign on the line to fix choppers that have already been in service for nearly half a century, how embarrassing..

Quote from another Youtube entry which is entirely believable...
"Next, that white vapor in the video seen streaming from the aircraft is venting fuel from the retractable fuel dump probe."

What onto the deck on take off!?! I would like to think it's not fuel. I don't think the deck crew would appreciate Jet A1 sprayed all over their place of work.

Every source I've got says 'Anon'. It seems to have just come about without anyone knowing where from. The full quote is: "Speed is life, altitude is life insurance. No one has ever collided with the sky."

Oh, my all time fave aircraft - well, the death of one of the two built.

I agree with Skunk on both accounts.
The XB-70 Valkyrie was a truly awesome machine and I don't thnk a particular person or organisation can be attributed to inventing the saying of "Speed is life".

Can anybody tell me what seems to be venting from the tail of the Vigilante on take off?

Well from what I learned in physics at uni is, that its a cloud of water vapour that just condensed out of rapidly expanding air in the rarefied region behind the wall of compressed air.. So basically its just the water in the air turning into water vapour.

OK. The schematic that I have, shows that half way up the tailfin there is the RWR (Rear Warning Receiver) unit. It hasn't been placed at the top of the fin as there is a major hinge-fold system that folds the top half of the tailfin!
On the underside of the RWR there is the fuel vent pipe!!!
    Taaa daaahhhh!! An answer!

    Nerd info: RA-5C Vigi. Length:23.35m Span:16.17m Height: 5.91m. Max speed: MACH 2.1.

Last clue: It came about because of Soviet made, ground-launched anti aircraft missiles...
