    Change of excess for trackday?

I have recently learnt that going to a trackday, as long as I can get approval for the trackday in the first place, results in my excess being changed from $500 to $2000.

    Is this normal acceptable practice?

Was told this week when emailed Kiwibike about doing a TD, that for a one off fee of $50 per trackday I can get my excess down to $1000.
    Sounds fine, so I did.

what is your normal excess? What is the "reduced" to $1000 reduced from?

Did you agree when signing up for the policy on a different excess for trackdays than what is provided for in your policy?

Normal was $500, and TD cover was 15% of insured value I think, around 2k, or a bit more depending what bike I use.

I was just glad to have TD cover when I changed over.
I think I was told about the higher excess, must of been, as the TD cover was paramount for me to change, and tbh I'm happy with any cover for TDs.
Not that I've done many, only my 2nd coming up.
But its allowed me to do them with peace of mind about repairing if I crash etc.
No TD cover with my previous company stopped me from doing any.

My TD cover used to be $1000 for one of my bikes but when I bought the 1098S the policy on cover had rolled over and ended up being a percentage of the bikes value...which was just over $5,000 for the TD cover.
I promptly bought a track bike!

I do understand why things have changed though. The amount off people that have an oooops at some trackdays is actually fairly high therefore...blah blah blah

Star is 15% of your insured value for policies renewed or taken out starting December last year.

Can hardly blame them for trying to limit the loss. It's now also a written approval deal. Which reminds me...........

I am with star and my bike is valued at $5000. Took up the insurance last Aug 08. Trackday cover is $2000 or 40% of insurered value.

Seems they just make up the rules as they go or someones being misled somewhere along the line.

Thru Kiwibike, which I think is thru Star. But I only deal with Kiwibike.

I would prefer it if the company which insures me didn't give any cover for track days. Then my premium might come down.
    Here for the ride.

Dunno what's happening there but 40% is is random.. At that level you might as well not cover people at all.

I'm with Star but brokered through Kiwibike so YMMV. Dave was quite clear that is the deal on my policy renewal.

Just paid the $50 to Star to lower mine for the MotoTT day, the excess I got told if not paying the $50 was 15% or 2K whichever is greater, now it's $1000 by paying the $50 which is easier to swollow if I do crash I'm just amazed you can get cover when riding on a track

The whole thing comes down to perception. What is the risk.

    risks on road.

    Uneven surface
    melting tar
    diesel
    ice
    other road users
    animals
    road works
long rides where riders become tired
    suprise corners

    Risks on track

Rider riding outside his skill level
fatigue from high speed long sessions.

Purely on a risk factor shouldnt excess be lower for trackdays?
