I have been living in sunny Auckland for just over a month now and when I tell people that I am moving the Chirstchurch most NOT all of them are incredibly negative. I am either hearing that Chch is full or rednecks, that it just isn't as cosmo as Auckland, it is a suburb of the UK, 'why would you want to move there?', there is nothing down there etc etc.

I have heard similar utternaces and opinions expressed by people (NOT ALL Londoners) who live in London who just do not seem to realise, understand or believe that there is life, culture, countryside, a whole world outside of London.

So what I am looking to know is whether these opinions and this question regarding 'why' is based upon intercity rivalry, jealousy or something else that a foreigner or non-Londoner wouldn't understand? Any insight that would help ther transition would be great.

Auckland sucks. It's a shithole, go to Christchurch, take a coat and don't forget your rotary.

Christchurch has a better racetrack too...plus one of the best weekend road race tracks around the peninsular.
If you can, try & find a place to live on the peninsular,not in the 'burbs on the flats,....Redcliffs ,Sumner etc is lovely.

But it IS cold except in a nor'wester when it is stinkin' hot and it drizzles and its only 6 feet above sea level and the sea is freezing and the northeaster blows all bloody summer and there's air pollution and there's the "first four ships" factor and the sports fans are totally one eyed...bit like most parts of NZ really...

Pretty much true, except for the last bit - we got plenty boy racers.

Not to take anything away from Auckland, I am convinced it is a nice enough big city - with everything that goes with that term. But, if you're going to travel half the way around the globe to settle in a big city the choice would either be Sydney or Melbourne, I wouldn't even consider Auckland. If big city is what you want, why not do it properly?
It has to be said though - I am not a city person.

New Zealand is an awesome place for a huge number of reasons. To point out but a few: you got the nature, you got the space, you got the relaxed lifestyle, good food and wine , you got the good folks, all-up I would rather live here than anywhere else I've been. There are a few downsides of course - poor infrastructure (for a modern country), lower wages, freighting in stuff from overseas is both expensive and takes a long time...

I think you'll like it down here, it really isn't a bad spot.

I am not really a city person but I have to go where the work is and Christchurch was the place where I found a job. If I am going to work in a city I would rather have the chance to live in the countryside and commute easily to work than have to live in the city. I think from the looks of it Chch will be the place where it will be easy to do this. I love the countryside and Chch has some beautiful scenery too. I would never live in Sydney as I really didn't like it at all and the people I encountered were not friendly, nothing like Kiwis!

As for poor infrastructure I was amazed at how incredibly quickly my work permit came through (2 weeks) and IRD phoned me within 24 hours with my number (if you count government within the infrastructure). This would take forever in the UK. The wages in my sector are higher then in the UK and I am not freighting in stuff just yet so wont dare think about that yet!
