Try starting in safe mode and deleting the file.

Failing that, change the file attributes to remove the read only status use 'attrib -r' from command line.

Failing that, remove the hard drive and clean it from another computer.

    Failing that I charge $85/hour.

No need to remove hard drive simply to delete a file.
    The thing is...
Yahoo questions questions were just being deleted left right and centre.
Threads involving the file name at Symantec forums are also being deleted within minutes.
Big problem or not, this is fishy, and downright unprofessional to leave thousands around the world in the dark as this is not being addressed in the least.

Noone knows what it is. Norton is not telling anyone. It's new.
No google searches for 'pifts.exe' before around 6 hours ago, according to google trends. It is now around the 29th most popular search.

Again, I apologise for being a tinfoilhatman, just thought I'd bring it to anyones attention that cared in the least.

For a little abckround info... Norton had a virus built into their package that was only cured having purchased/registered their program. When they first appeared on the scene that is. Fair, I guess, but not very nice.
Some people just can't seem to comprehend that they do not have the right to be unoffended in their lives.

Pobably a silly question however have you tried:

    http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

It's free and pretty good at sorting such problems.
