Oh hell yeah! This is just what me and some mates used to do. From memory it tends to go a little something like this...

At first your a little tentative and then you progress and things are going fine, untill one night after a couple of beers you decide to have a little play with the gloves, this is fine. You quietly jab a little here and there untill the testosterone gets pumping and punches get a little harder. Then its only a matter of time untill some one just can't resist any longer and decides to bring out a massive upper cut! Then all hell breaks loose while spectators piss themselves laughing at your wild haymaker swings and it's cut lips and black eyes all around!

    Damn good fun though!

Boxing is fun......... a lot of fun.

I'd suggest you join Lee Gar, they are in Balmoral and run classes from Mon to Thur. Starting around 5:30 am.

The thing with doing your own thing is that you have no structure....... so after the first half hour you pretty much don't know what to do.......apart from being completely nackered........

So next time you try it you go hard for the first half hour........ do your stretching, etc get it on and then.........:spudwhat:

By joining someone professional at least you learn proper technique....... which is pretty important......

    Good Luck.......

I'll be keen if you wanna have a couple of rounds........ I'm around 73kgs....and pretty much your height........

About mouthguards, etc.... it's better we don't go for the heads...... "ONE" decent knock to the chin will put you or me to sleep and black eyes are a bloody inconvenience........

    Once again Good Luck.....

Get some head gear too. It's amazing how much it hurts when you get clocked a goodie in the side of the head. Plus its not good news getting concussion.

Not a cheap option but if your ultmiate goal is getting race fit - buy a mx bike. Racing one of those knackers you in 10 minutes like you wouldn't believe + it's getting all the right riding muscles sorted.

Head gear gets in the way and is for woosies IMHO.

Get some 14 Oz gloves, make sure you establish some rules like timed rounds, blows below the belt etc and have enough people on hand to break you up if things get out of hand.

Keep your hands up at all times and with 14 Oz gloves it is unlikely you will do any major damage, unless David Tua or someone his size joins in.

Spar with people you trust to control themselves at least until you get some skills.

Anyone in Welly want to have a go at this ???

My place is well set up. PM me if ya keen.

    Head gear

Head gear is recomended for sparring when you are not in a sprung ring.

In TKD they made head gear compulsory for sparring because people were falling over and hitting their head. However, TKD sparring involves a lot of kicking and a higher likelihood of falling over. If your are novices and sparring on a hard surface I would still recommend it.

Strong, but light mussels? Planning a seafood bbq? Bro, I think you should have a look at that book I have on Bruce Lee's training methods (it's in the garage) you can train for speed and endurance with weights. Note that training for speed is different from training for endurance. Speed training is essentially anaerobic (does not use oxygen) whereas endurance training is very aerobic. Speed training develops your fast-twitch muscles , whereas endurance training develops your slow-twitch muscles. Body-building develops your fast-twitch muscles too, but in a different way. BB adds bulk to the fast-twitch muscles by stressing them and forcing them to absorb more nutrients. Speed training trains your nervous system to send impulses to your fast-twitch muscles more efficiently and speeds up the contraction rate of the muscles themselves too.

If you show up at the gym when I'm there, I could show you what you need to do..

As for informal sparring, back when I used to go to Wing Chun classes, the guys used to get a tad carried away in the sparring sessions. Nothing like a punch in the mouth to wake you up and get motivated!

Its very hard to get head gear to fit properly and it swivels about and impairs your vision - exactly what you don't want when someone is trying to punch you in the face.

TKD doesn't involve punches to the head so less likely that headgear will swivel round and cause this problem. Personally I never liked TKD for that reason and after watching it at the Olympics I can't say I was impressed at all. All that protective gear, no punches to the head, excessive use of force ????. WTF ??

It looked scrappy and uncontrolled - that is when there was actually some action - seemed the opponents were more interested in bobbing about for the entire bout than actually fighting.

Yeah, the WTF stuff is a bad image. The WTF is only the sport, the clubs are formed under the Kukkiwon (sp?) and I have sparred in open and Karate matches semi successfully. Don't take the top level WTF stuff as an idea about the martial art TKD (even the affiliated clubs).

What I love most about TKD bouts is the rule where if you turn your back to your opponent, they're not allowed to touch you...

TKD these days is a sport, not a martial art. It's closer in spirit to rhythmic gymnastics than boxing.

[Edit: naturally, I'm referring to WTF (hehe, like, WTF?) not the Proper Old Skool Korean Kick-Ya-In-The-Head-And-Dance-About-On-Your-Grave stuff.]
kiwibiker is full of love, an disrespect.
