Hey guys,

How good is MX armour as opposed to normal road CE-approved hard armour?

I'm thinking of grabbing an older leather two-piece suit but it doesn't have body armour as such and I know armour is pretty necessary right?

So I thought maybe an option could be to buy some MX armour such as http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/List...x?id=211413154 and wear it underneath the leathers... Thoughts?

I'm thinking that if the armour is just as good as normal jacket armour then it'll be even better as it will be strapped directly onto my body and not move at all.

And try and insert/attach them to the two-piece itself. Does anyone know if this would be possible/easy? I'm guessing Kerry at MSW in K road would be the best person to chat to?

You sound like you've got it sussed.
Yes, armour attached to yoi rather than the suit would actually be very good, apart from the convenience factor (may be hard to get the leathers on if they catch a bit on the armour). If you have MX armour already, this would be the cheapest option.
Yes, Kerrie can do it for you - I had her add some knee and hip armour to my leather pants (had only thin foam in knees). She can also supply suitable armour (has a big box of it), so you don't need to find some. The advantage with getting her to do it is she will make sure it's located properly, and is comfy.

Cheers yeah well there are a few decent looking older two-pieces out there and they're going for great prices so I started thinking about how it'd all work out as I'd definitely want armour.

Hopefully the leathers I'll get will have foam armour in it, at least I know it'll be easy as hell to chuck some new hard armour in it... Do you know if she's able to fit armour if there's none already attached? I.e. There are no pockets for armour to be inserted?

I used to do the same and wore the armour
(similar to this armoured jersey http://www.motorcyclegear.co.nz/shopexd.asp?id=1045 but was Shift, not EVS) under a hoody and PVC jacket for the rain...

It was around $70 from MotoMail's Outlet store.
Has a wicked full length spine protector, which most (all?) offroad roost deflectors (in your first link) lacks.

Still use the spine protector (zips away from the aromoured jersey) with my current leather/cordura jacket.
Was the same as the $120 spine protector upstairs, but the MX one just has the velcro abdomen strap, rather than the shoulder straps on the road one.

The jersey's shoulder and forearm armour seem more substantial than the Knox in my jacket, but the jacket doesnt fit if try to wear the entire armoured jersey.

Also, have the Shift MX knee armour. $25 at Alpha on Newton Rd with Alpha Card. This again seems far more substantial than armour in my pants. The kids size fits me near perfectly as elbow/forearm armour, and again seems more substantial than the Knox in my jacket...

In some MX Amour the design is based around giving the rider Stone impact protection as opposed to bone breaking impact protection (FYI source KNOX) and based on this I would recommend getting proper CE armour, MAdmax does do these kits so that would be my recommendation anyway.

Sticking my Qmoto hat on, I have a suit that I gave away a while ago that is coming back to me which might interest you, you can have it for next to nicks if the size is right, I dunno might be a option.

Actually I have a bunch of CE amours lying around here, Shoulders and Knees unsure of elbows but prolly some somewhere here, you can have it for free if it helps you out.

Let me know if your interested and I will scout around tomorrow and chuck some in a courier bag for you.

So I just got some wicked mint retro leathers that are in pretty good shape and fit me awesomely! Gonna call in and see Kerrie tomorrow and see how much she'll quote me to fit armour into the jacket.

The pants have zipped pockets at the knees where I can chuck armour in already, both pants and jacket have lining so it should be quite easy to either attach pockets for armour, or simply velcro some armour on!.....Right?!

I took out the armour of my current jacket and wore it underneath the new jacket and it still all fits perfectly, so this should be exactly what I was after!
