    How long-Picton to Invercargill

How far is it from picton ferry to Invercargill and how long a drive is it.
    Also From Picton To christchurch.
Driving a cage at legal speeds.

At legal speeds, in a cage Chch to Invercargill via Twizel is about 7 1/2 hrs

I think Picton Chch may be about 4 or a little more

Its going to take you ALL day...

Picton Christchurch is 330 or so kms....
Have done it under 3 hours on the bike, but legal limits in the cage would be 4 hours, plus the time you allow for breaks.
Christchurch Dunedin is a good 5 hours....
Dunedin Invercargill another 215 kms or nearly 3 hours

Use wises.co.nz for trip times and directions. It is much more accurate than google maps with regard to trip times anyway. Sometimes it pays to check both for any anomolies.

    DistanceTotal distance: 897 kms
    TimeApproximate driving time: 11 hrs

    Absolutely agree.....
the east coastal drive is only nice around Kaikoura.
Inland is way nicer...and mainly empty roads.
All the tax collectors are along the coast as well...

    Beware

There is a Speed Tax collector based in Twizel too

And very very successful he is too

(Tax collection bases at Fairlie, Wanaka, Queenstown & Winton too)

Even on the bike it took me 11 1/2 hours in January, at illegal speeds until the Timaru cop..... That allowed for breaks every hour. Say 12 hours in a cage although you could do it at night faster.

I agree about going inland through the Mckenzie Country (Tekapo-Twizel) instead of SH1. Wonderful roads, vast distances, world class scenery and little traffic.

Its actually 50k further but just as quick as SH1 - done it many times.

Not many people catch on to this trick. Never drive fast with chix as passengers. Why? Because they concentrate on the road rather than let their mind wander on, um, "other" things. 90k max!

There is another trick with going slow - and that is, it FEELS LIKE the trip is much shorter. Try it for yourself in the cage (it's utterly pointless trying to get anywhere fast in a cage anyway) sit at 90k using the cruise control if you have one, and the hours just FLY past. If you go fast you might get there a little quicker (or not at all), but it FEELS LIKE it takes forever. Weird how the mind works.

So your recommendation is to go slower and it will feel like you get there quicker?

So - the extra hour you added onto the journey comes from some break in the space / time continuum?

Where do you come up with this stuff?
