    2 stroke throttle shenanigans

    Yes, its a n00b question.

    Every now and then I read or hear that you should vary the throttle and speed of a 2 stroke to stop it exploding in your face (or under your butt as it happens).

    How does this apply to scooters that are usually held balls to wall wide open? Is the stop/start of normal commuting enough, or should I vary it a bit along the long straights of Gt/New North rd?

    So long as you keep the oil well topped up and check that it is being used ain't leaking, you shouldn't have to many issues. Your little Jog will keep going all day long with no issues...

    Heat is the enemy of a 2t motor and on a scooter especially when extra speed doesn't mean (much) extra cooling keeping it pinned wide open is asking for a seize...but as Rhys says, Yamaha will have put a lot of effort into making sure that you'll be fine. It's only once you start tuning that you need to be careful..

    If you are worried about heat and think the engine is really hot. Stop and turn off the bike and open the throttle and few times. This will dump a bit of cool fuel into the bore, it wont be cold and crack anything as the carb and general engine surrounds will heat it up before it hits anything, but will give a bit of instant relief.

    Clogged exhaust are dangerous to 2 strokes as hot fumes cant escape and heat up the engine badly.

    Sounds like you have no worries though.

    Awesome, thanks for the tip.

    My commute is 20km each way, I don't think it’s getting excessively hot, and I'm not going full throttle yet (still running in) so it should be cool.

    Loving the 2 wheels btw. Should have done it sooner!

    We've got forced air cooling on scooters, so best just to stop and leave it idling...

    Probably a good idea to carry a spare piston, just in case.
    It's only when you take the piss out of a partially shaved wookie with an overactive 'me' gene and stapled on piss flaps that it becomes a problem.

    oh right, Not too bad though if you have no forced air like the missus's 66 Jawa 50, the old, old owners manual reckons this will quickly stop an alloy piston from the early stages of soft seizing. Yeah hers is in no way modern
