I presume the square icon in the system tray (bottom right, by the computer clock) is grey, instead of being red, yellow green and black? You should be able to right click on it, and open the software. On the left hand side, look for Update now (or something, don't have it on this PC) and it should tootle off to update.

Nope, it's all in its colours and when i right click on it - open and update are greyed out and only exit is accessible.

It won't even open from the programmes list.

If it doesn't update, either the installation is messed up (happens from time to time) and you need to re-install (and AVG 8.5 Free is now out) or a virus/spyware/malware is deliberately blocking AVG from doing anything...

I have had it installed for some time and was working a while ago. I'll try downloading 8.5
