    WTB damaged gen1 SV650 tank

Has anyone got a damaged 1st gen SV650 tank lying around?

I'm thinking about trying to make a tank that doesn't get in the way of my knees so much. A damaged tank might be a good place to start.

You thinking of making a glass tank? If so PM me and I may be able to help you out. I also have a damaged tank that has been repaired but its worth more than $50 to me.

I'm still trying to figure out the best way to make it, I thought maybe I could modify a standard tank. Another idea was to make a smaller aluminium tank and a fibreglass cover, but it might be difficult to make a big enough tank since it looks like a lot of the volume is held in the weird shape above and around the airbox. I stumbled across this thread on making a fibreglass tank:

Looks good, but I'm concerned about it cracking or wearing through if I bin it. But fibreglass would be the easiest way to get the shape right I think...
    Still thinking about it.

If you made a mould of your tank, then built up the mould where your knees go, then made a fibreglass tank from that, wouldn't that work?
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

Theres a bit to making a fibreglass tank. If you havent done this sort of stuff before its best to start with something easier like a front guard or tailpiece. If its for the road getting a tank and chopping it about a bit would be safer and easier.

Are you like a really big guy or something as I find it odd that the tank is in the way of your legs. If you look at that link you posted they built another tank to put more width in it above the knees like a Ducati.

It's for the track. I'm 6'4", when I'm hanging off the bike, my knee rests against the top lip of the cutout, plus I think the back of the tank is too vertical and pushes my knee/thigh too far back. I think it makes it difficult to put my weight on the outside peg. My bandit with it's narrower and more sloping forward tank feels better.

Just finished looking though that thread, hell it's long. I might see if I can just strap a small oil container on as a makeshift tank and ride round the block to see what it feels like, it would give me a better idea of whether the shape of the tank was worth trying to change. I probably won't ever go making a female mould and fancy tank like that guy did though. Maybe the lost foam plug method, or something ugly out of aluminium or a damaged original tank (could be quite extensively damaged even).

YES, that would work BUT BUT BUT

Very dam dangerous just out of fibre glass, what happens when if you hit the ground? The fiberglass WILL FRACTURE, and you and your bike and any marshalls trying to help you, WILL all probally BURN?????

If building this kind of Petrol Tank, you WILL NEED to find an anti exsplosive cell that you put put inside the tank to make is safe.

BEST, Just modify a Metal Tank PLEASE

    +1

Safety is the most important consideration when changing anything from standard.

Also if your running standard rearsets you may want to consider going to something a little more aggressive as they will eventually be to low. Something around 25mm back and 25mm up is a good start. Then you may find your knees are somewhere different!
