Question Good wine 1st or 2nd?

Serious poll this. Just have a couple of friends over for dinner and a debate ensued before the first bottle was opened.

If you have a v. nice bottle of wine and a drinkable but average bottle, which do you drink first?

The good one - you haven't tainted your palate and you're sober enough to appreciate the sublte tastes (my vote btw)

    OR

The average one - the wine gets better over the evening, not worse.

Buy two decanters or claret jugs, keep the good wine for yourself and serve the average one to your guests of course!

Well Id have the good one while your palate still appreciates it. I also understood that alcahol sort of temporarily kills your taste buds (dont quote me on that maybe a myth) anyway I know I always start with quality when Im drinking boubon or whiskey, then have the crap later.

Use the order that a winery will give you tastings as a guide - Sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, aromatics (riesling, gewürztraminer), pinot noir, merlot, cabernet sauvignon, shiraz.

The earlier on this list you drink first, the later second, etc. This is so the following wine will have the depth of taste to compete against the earlier. For example if you started with a shiraz and followed with a pinot the pinot would be lost in the aftertaste of the earlier wine.

If you have two wines of the same variety I'd probably go for the better one first to get maximum enjoyment out of it.

I get too much wining at home. As long as it isn't you alone drinking the first bottle, have the better one second to appreciate the improvement over the first.

The cheap fuckin tight-wads brought over a one-card special.

If I'd read MisterD's advice I would've done the decanting trick.

Unless you're consuming them with the sole intention of getting pissed, seeking refreshment or quenching a thirst, alcoholic beverages can also be an olfactory experience.

However the more/stronger the spirit consumed, the more it has a deleterious effect on the senses of taste and smell.

On that basis, always quaff the good stuff first.

If you want to get liquored, go for the cheapest spirit you can afford and douse it with cheap splits and ice. Drinking anything else is a complete waste of money. If you're thirsty, drink beer. There's no greater crime than philistines abusing the top shelf or a decent wine cellar.
