I believe 2 or 3 years ago he made the call that he isn't too interested in the transponder side of things now, he wants everyone to have their own and he just wants to show up to a meeting and run the timing setup. From what I've heard the logistics of charging, maintaining and chasing people up that forget to give them back is a massive headache for him!

Well I think you would have a very unplesant surprise if you did infact happen to stuff one. The responsibility is on the rider to ensure the transponder is returned in the same condition as it was given to them in. If not then you will find yourself footing the bill for a replacement!!
I had better read the fine print on the contact then, um... I don't actually remember signing a contract...Nothing in the entry about being liable for damage to transponders ?

The hard wired one is a bit cheaper ~$570.

No worries about charging it up either.

My friend is using it at the moment so will have to get it back first.
As long as it's the TranX260 it should be OK. (rated to 260km/h)

Some of the ones used for motorcross (The AMBmx orange ones) are only rated up to 120km/h and won't work for road race.

Lies.... If someone could get me the circuit diagram of one of these puppies I could price up how much to build one and make it eddie proof (reads smash proof)

I'll be needing one to so will see what I can sort.

Good luck, you will probably have to wreck one to work out the internals. If you take the cover off they are filled with goop. Secondly each transponder has a unique id which is all linked into their website etc, so I don't even know if a non amb transponder will work properly with their system??

yes the "goop" is a two part resin that protects the electronics from massive bumps and prying eyes. Relatively cheap and marvelous stuff..

As for he circuitry a transponder is a transponder... You just need to know the frequency and what sort of info is being burst out and walla can make one.. just need to know the details. Circuit diagrams are really usefull but if someone has such info I might have a play around..

If you did make a working Transponder with an ID that AMB are not already using the first time you tried to use it AMB/Mylaps could either refuse to publish the results or tell Tim Gibbes he's banned until he sorts out the illegal transponder issue. And/or take you to court for copyright infringment. Get the picture?

Holy shit..... No wonder they can get away with charging whatever they like. They have just basically monopolised the market and so if you want to race you have to buy a ridiculously overpriced piece of hardware. I can understand the exact replica problems and certain firmware patents etc but as I said a transponder is a transponder. So even if you wanted to use another brand you can't because it isn't allowed to be used with the race organisers hardware..

Feck me sideways something seem a little fishy there..... kinda hard going on racers starting out on a shoestring budget... better stock up on 2 minute noodles..

How much would it cost for you to make a simple lap timer...one that operates off a becon..measure to 100th's of a second...for test days etc..[there is a market for them...they are not freckin cheap!! go google!!]
