Sounds like as far as you were to know he was just a bloke down on his luck and your helping him is commendable. You had no way or reason to believe otherwise. What has since transpired is independendent of you and your kindness.

It is possible that he was himself a victim early in life and his recent acts are a manifestation of this. Perhaps your kindness was one of the few kind acts in an otherwise retched life. While what has happened is a terrible thing you have no reason to feel responsible in any way.

I hope this experience hasn't put you off doing kind things for people, like another poster has said at least your kindness my have trickled down to his children which is a good thing. I'm sure they could do with more of that in their lives.
