    The older the wiser?

Dont know which thread to put this in.

Recently my stepdad has got his learners licence a week ago, bragged alot to his mates at work and now they are all getting a motorcycle. The thing that pisses me off is that he tries to teach me everything, talking to me as if i know worse than he does. The thing is that im on my restricted (riding for about 2 years) and i know thats piss all but when he talks himself up i take him for a ride and he nearly chrashes around every corner, tries to follow me when i lane split and stalls an clips a toyotas rear mirror, takes about 2 starts before he finally DOESENT STALL! AT EVERY TRAFFIC LIGHT. Mostly i guess him trying to be the "father figure" or the "older the wiser" man he wants to be able to teach me, feels that he knows more because his age. Same with his mate at work, the bloke has his full licence but answered 5 questions to pass it (in the old days). He has never ridden on the road, but has the nerve to tell me what riding is all about, riding with the breeze in his hair yet funnily enough he hasnt ridden a motorcycle so maybe in a cager for him. Hes buying a rf900 which can do speeds of 260kph.

Anyway my question is to all you club 250 riders (restricted, full preferably) have you ever been treated like this by a older person. Because you ride a 250 and you are younger, the older one thinks he knows better and feels he needs to teach you when they mostlikely know shite compared to you.

The trusty silver back syndrome strikes again. Your step-dad is getting there with you mate, take his ummmm advice with the grain of salt it is delivered with, he really means well, and may not be totally full of shit. He sounds quite a cool step dad to me

Just smile and nod and say "Thanks, I'll consider that." Then do your own thing. He'll get over it in time.

I think there is only one reasonable solution to a situation like this.

    A race. To the death.

Maybe you both need to take a different approach to your riding.
Why don't you's go for a ride and try and lean/help each other, he may not be as good a rider as you, but you never know you may lean something yourself.

Ive been riding some 35 odd years and still leaning, these days the advice is coming from people half my age, wish I knew than what i know now.
Why would you ride that long and that gnarly stuff if you don't have to, Its what we do, we love it.

Beleieve me when he talked himself up i said i would give him a run for his money. Went out to muriwai and expected him from what he said he could do, cained it around the bends and he was 2 bends behind me!. I slowed down for him because i was going way to fast for him, if he continued i would of made him a statistic.

Geez, it's not like he's related to you. Just pretend you don't know him.

There has been so many times when my stepdad has embarissed me yet gave me a huge laugh at the same time. Coming out of muriwai and there was a long bumper to bumper traffic, he pulls out into a school carpark and called it lane splitting and then stalling nearly hitting this poor lady getting into her parked car. He scared the living day lights out of her, then he pulls back in realising he didnt even get ahead of the cars then goes back on the pathway running with his bike. And when i was in a mates driveway (it was gravel) and he starts fine going up the driveway then loses balance and goes flying into the garden then hitting a barrier, its on video ill try to upload it.

He should get himself to a riding course asap. I dont care if it is a laugh, imagine a learner driver pulling half those antics, scaring people, almost crashing on every corner, riding into barriers......

would it be a hoot then or would you all be falling like fire and brimstone upon them.

It is fantastic to get parents to learn to ride, I got my mum into it last year after her wanting a bike for decades, but I got her private riding lessons before she even hit the road. Even then she has a communication system on incase she gets nervous and Im always "behind". I can always keep an eye on her and this way no pressure for her to keep up with me.

Really? How could you make him a statistic? Isn't he the one in control of his throttle hand?
I'm not saying that he wasn't trying to keep up when he was out of his depth, but it is quite possible that he does know his 'limits' and was falling behind for that reason. I hope you know your limits, as trying to keep in front may be pushing your abilities.
Can I suggest that you talk to him about doing a RRRS course (with The Stranger) and maybe you could do it together. There's always something to learn.

Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

The RRRS course is a great idea, and it could be fun to do together. He'd be sure to learn a lot, and they can be fun. Who doesn't enjoy a lot of low speed slaloming?

Before you laugh too hard at him (and upload embarrassing videos of him) remember that you'll be an old fart one day too. */Dad*

Per ce the pressure on him to catch up was imense, i could tell by some parts of his riding. I have been thinking though that maybe he has gotten into riding and trying to teach me because he wants to be a father even though hes not by blood. I guess thats what fathers/stepfathers do? any kber fathers know?
