Just need a tow bar...

Hi all,

Granted this may be moved... but...

with the chance of another track day coming up and not wanting to be in as much pain as I was the last time, I have potentially sourced a bike trailer. Problem is my car doesn't have a tow bar. How much do they cost? Anyone know anyone around the Welly area that they trust with their life who will fit one as i'll be converting the family car...

Usually $200-400 including wiring, depending on your car.

Just drop by a couple of local mechanics and ask them - it's easier than posting on KB as a matter of fact!

Cheers for that. I hate dealing with mechanics without a recommendation, especially when my family have to be transported around in the car... hence why I'll do as much of my own maintenance as possible as i've had all sorts of little things missed when repairs have been made... once bitten etc...

It's pretty hard for them to go wrong with a towbar. Most "family" cars a towbar will bolt on (my Honda Accord was unusual, and needed welding on). The time-consuming bit is putting a hole in and doing the wiring. All up about a hour of work.

You could try a wrecker for a 2nd hand towbar, then get someone to fit it. I was looking at $600 for a towbar for my car (silly Euro cars ), managed to get one from a wrecker for about $150. Another $100 to get it fitted and Bob's your Aunty

What sort of car is it ? I just picked one up off a mate who has a few lying round his workshop for diddly squat !

Let's not get into Mechanics vs Engineers, my Engineer dad used to slap me about the head everytime I confused the 2... more often than not winding him up, but every now and then... DOH!!!

Tis a Mazda MPV, not seen many with a tow bar on them, so not sure if one can be bolted or whether there'll be welding, or whether the tolerence is there to handle towing... Like I say, a bit more research is needed...

Yeah had a look under my van and looks like it'll be a mission as the bolt holes aint there lol

Looks like a bit over 6,000 internets reckon you can do it.

Hell, Wikipedia says that you can even buy a snow-plough for the MPV, so it should tow quite happily.

I recently got a towbar put on my Subaru wagon by Wellington Towbar and Bullbar services, they are at 3 Vivian Street, a guy I work with recommended them to me and I would recommend them as well.
If i remember correctly it cost $360.00 all up, thats for towbar, wiring and fitting, i think they do there own engineering stuff as well.

Plus 1 on the mechanics,got a towbar for my old corolla from toymota dealer,assured bumper didn't need removal and did it myself,easy peasy except take the spare tyre out,no I didn't puncture it,wired it up and all good.
Best thing when talking to a mechanic there said they had a guy who did towbars on new cars,he managed to puncture 3 tyres,was a bit slow,but the boss' son.
