My boss and I are currently toying with the idea of tool allowances, the boss is supplying everything atm, but is getting pissed off with the amount of gear getting lost by the workers, he thinks, maybe if they own their own tools they might be more responsible with them.......
You need approval from ird to pay a tax free tool allowance

I negotiated with ird several years ago for a company I worked to pay a tax free tool allowance of 40 cents an hour

All that is required is a decent business case and form filling in

IRD employ people selected primarily on ethnic basis rather that the best qualified person for the job so its is quite easy to pull the wool over their eyes and work the system to pay out generous tax free allowances

One thing to consider - if you're expected to use your own power tools, then the consumables related (drill bits, sander-belts, saw blades, etc) should be replaced or provided by the employer as required. That's the way we operate.

A tax free tool allowance was part of the Union award for decades. Most contracts in my game are closely worded on the old award....so I get a tool allowance, dunno if it's tax free, but it's there. Not enough to buy tools with....but good for lunch money.

So what's retail Sarge? - your sticker price, which is supposed to be our trade price....or do you remove the price tag for non trade buyers?

my old boss was pretty sweet. He just took me shopping once a month. Started with the tool box and over a couple of years i filled it. And its so nice to have your own well kept gear. Good luck.

I have an awesome tool kit

everything I need, if I want it and can afford it the I buy it

    tools

I have no problem with using my own gear, If something gets broken/lost on the job then the boss is happy to replace it (its pretty rare)

we are just trying to come up with a way of making the guys take more resonsability for the stuff they use every day, reather than wrecking everything they come across, becuase they dont care....

EVERYBODY gets a 200 doller bonus at xmass tie or at the end of the financial year (more more regularly would be better) if less than '8 tools' as lost/damaged/destroyed.

The pack will keep everybody in check.

Christ I have to pay for EVERYTHING, yes granted work has an interest/fee free account I can use on proviso it's paid back, but if even I made a joke about the business buying me something I'd probably be burned at the stake on charges of fraud and heresy.

retail is sticker price .. trade is between 10-15% off that ..sometimes i can fudge it a bit if dealing with a good client ( large users get additional .. etc)
