Nothing to do with God mate, Most Africans especially in areas that are still very tribal are VERY VERY supersticious. They probably thought that those 'witches' (which they could have been, satanism and witchcraft is still rife in Africa along with human sacrifice etc.) had bought some abd luck or calamity down on them.
