Hey guys, does anyone have any contacts or usefull info on sending bikes to OZ to race?
Im considering breaking it down and sending small packages to a friends shop.
If anyones been down this road before and they have some good ideas please let me know

Hey Choppa,
I have sent bikes to Japan and USA before, all you need to do is talk to a shipping broker and they will run you through what you need.
Easiest way I have found is to make a secure crate (enclosed sides) and put all you gear in there as most places charge by the sq/m.
Go to your plcal bike shop and you should be able to get a crate from a new bike and just modify that.

Steve Bagshaw is probably the best to talk to. I was one of the four that went over to Philip Island in 07 for the motogp support class. We air freighted over and sea freighted back. I think it was roughly $2.5k each return but your bike would weigh about twice a 125 all up and weight is a big factor taken into account in the bill.Originally Posted by CHOPPA

The problem with breaking it up and sending it over in small pieces would be the import taxes and duty you would have to pay. When we took our bikes over we got a thing called a carnet. Its a piece of paper (think it costs around $300) that said what we are taking over and how long it will be in the country for. It also states that what we take in we will take out (i.e. not sell any of it) and we will not take out anything extra.
Either way its an expensive exercise no matter which way you go about it. You can save by going sea instead of air but it takes a bit longer and is not as reliable, but if you give yourself a few weeks buffer it is probably worth the savings. If you can get 2 or 3 other guys to go it will save each of you a considerable amount of money. There are quite a few fees that are the same no matter how many bikes etc you are taking over. We used GV International and were very impressed by their services, wouldn't hesitate to recommend them again.
