    Ducati ST4 aftermarket mufflers

    Hey guys, the summers almost here. Went for a spin with McJim and his 600 Duke made an honest sound compared with the ST4. We swopped bikes and I was astonished that when he passed me (the hoon.....) that I couldn't even hear my own bike. Mind you, Jimmys 600 isn't exactly quiet.

    I don't want to modify the factory pipes, keep them for originality and WOF if necessary.

    There are certainly pipes on Trademe for Ducatis but almost none for the ST4. That is because header pipe extensions are needed before any slipons can be attached.

    I've seen cans as cheap as $85 ea on Tardeme although I'm happy to pay more than that, assuming the cheapies won't last long. Still, it looks as though you can get slipons for $400 which is a long way from the $900 the bike shops are talking.

    Any thoughts?

    Well I'm no expert but is it possible to but the new headers seperately giving you carte blanche to buy the slip ons of choice?

    I did find a NZ website recently which had the extensions for sale in addition to mufflers - but forgot to bookmark it

    The worthy Mr Sensible says it's more trouble than it's worth and proper full units are the best choice.

    I think its possible to make the modded muffler quiet at wof time as well.Keep an eye out on tm for another set the same as yours that you could get gutted.I got a mint set for my SS for $100 and the guy posted them for $10.Bargain

    Good call Dave, it had occurred to me that there will be de-baffled originals lying around which will eventually get sold.

    Thought of doing similar on the ST3 apparently there are not to many after market ones around due to the fact that the ST's pipes/mufflers are designed to change position depending on the luggage is on or off.
    Its not the destination that is important its the journey.

    Exactly. Same on the ST2 and ST4. Quite a neat design but it means the extension pipe is needed. The MCR guys in Dunedin tell me they fit after-market mufflers no problem and get an exhaust shop to make the connecting pipes.

    They reckoned cost is about $800 including tuning the bike afterwards. I'd be tempted but its 250k to Dunedin plus no bike for at least a day while the work gets done = at least two days off work.

    The St4s I just found and it followed me home has been partially debaffled and happily goes the the testing station and VINZ with out an issue... Still loud (bit quieter than the VTR) but enough to know you are there...

    You beauty, congratulations man, tell us all about it. The "S" is the best choice if you can find one at a reasonable price - they tend to be at an understandable premium.

    From my reading the main difference is the ohlins shock because 0 - 100 and quarter mile times are very similar to the ST4 with the 916 motor. Still, I'd have an ST4S too, reckon they will become more valuable as time passes.

    Muffler Update

    I never did get carbon or SS aftermarket mufflers. Instead - by accident - I bought a clean set of 888 mufflers on Trademe. Never thought I'd win the auction but for $101 what the heck. Cost me nearly as much to get them from Auckland to Invercargill.

    Then a friendly engineer made up extensions and fitted them. He also drilled out the internal pipe but surprisingly, it hasn't produced the expected snarl. So right now I'm thinking about the next step which will probably be to split/cut off the outer sleeve and then remove the internal pipe completely, plus the packing.

    my blog have a read

    I have ridden an ST4 with the 916 and it felt a little under powered compared to what I was use to on the VTR. However the ST4s with the 996 totally different beast. The shocks and the extra power you definitely feel the racing heritage in the 6000 rpm range. But just as comfortable (for me) as the VTR...
