i had one for more than a year...got my restricted and full on that bike and i LOVED HER

light azz so you could through her around
AWESOM low end power so can motor off the mark or out of corners
i weigh 80kgs and i got her to go up to 155kms screamin in fifth (5 speed but beautiful)
had the lovely candy red 2002 model

sad ending tho, right before i sat my full (when i was doing defensive driving which is ironic) some moron hit her when she was parked and did a runner

dented the tank, bent handle bar, scratches everywher, bent pegs...almost broke down to tears when i came out and found her that way

spent a bit of money fixing her up and then reluctantly sold her so i could upgrade a few months back

    still miss her tho

only thing it could of had was a suzuki gear box!!! crap honda box, clunky and hard to find N.
a 6 speed box would transform the bike i reckon.

Well I think you're makin' a wee generalisation about crap Honda box. I have a VT250 Spada, which is the older, faster, racier version of the VTR and it's gearbox is fine. I had a XR200, and have ridden an XR250, and I have owned a CT125 bucket. None of these bikes had 'crap Honda gear box.

But you're right about a 6speed box. I have yet to ride a VTR, but have ridden with them, and my Spada just leaves 'em for dead. In torque and top speed. 170 out of the Spada, and a very inaccurate (me counting - although I am a musician so do have good timing) test of 0-100 in about 7 seconds proves to be fairly good.

The VTR is a good bike, don't get me wrong. But I wouldn't want to trade my Spada in on one. Glad I got the older sister.

Peace hath higher tests of manhood

    than battle ever knew.

The clunky Honda gearbox is just a generalisation, much like unreliable Ducatis. Like the unreliable Ducati stories, this too has a grain of truth in it. The VT250 box may be `fine', as is the gearbox in my 250RS, but a GSXR600 box seems silky smooth by comparison, and certainly no worries about false neutrals.

They may be clunky, loud and heavy, but they seem to be pretty reliable. Kind of like a BMW parallel twin; I really struggled to work my way through the box on that in a hurry

@Sidewinder, every bike manufacturer worth their salt hardens the gears in the box. Otherwise they won't last terribly long.

would you buy a late 80's 90's Ducati?? every time i go to a bike shop there are heards of them in bits!, i have a blackbird now and its hit 70,000km gearbox is still a hard clunk into 1st! just like every other honda i have had the pleasure to ride.
I found all three of my suzuki bikes gearbox action so much smoother.
How long they last may be another question! i know rf900 and gsxr1100's tend to drop 2nd gear when worn.
All i was trying to say was the little vtr was great but the hard "thunk" into 1st was a real bitch.

This is my VTR250 just before I sold her. A heavy heart and a tear in my eye as I sold her to a young fella from Tauranga.

Custom paint job by the way due to crate damage on the way from Japan - had to replace the seat cover too.

2003 model - been to Taupo and back and been to Napier and back on it.

    A good bike - recommended.

As for clucky gear boxes - I went from this to a 98 Ducati and they're very similar in feel. I can't always tell if the gear has changed on a Suzuki.

Dude! I was agreeing with you, you tit

Yeah I've got the `thunk' into 1st as well, and that's with all manner of fooling around with clutch adjustment. You can feel it through the whole chassis.

there has to be a reason for it, i did find that on the blackbird at the right revs it clicked in rather than a clunk but ive only ever managed to do it a few times
