    FZR250, not revving

I charged the battery for my bike last night and tried to start it. The bike starts fine but will not rev and will only stay running if the throttle is held on. I took out the spark plugs and gave them a good clean as a few of them had become black and sooty. The spark plugs have recently been changed but the bike has been idle for atleast a month. Any help appreciated.

Just a idea. Tap the carbs, floats could be stuck.

I'm going to go ahead and buy new spark plugs, $60 again.

I checked the plugs and we have spark, they are turning black again though. Running far too rich? I did not have the correct gaskets for the carb seal to cylinder, so I used gasket paper. I am now told that I needed to use gasket paper glue with that (thanks a fucking lot cyclespot "just make your own with gasket paper"). Could a not so tight seal be letting out the air?

I'm no expert, but I think you should wait before spending cash on new spark plugs.
If it's running too rich, the gaskets probably aren't leaking, if they were it would make it run lean, I think.

Have you checked to make sure the throttle cables are hooked up properly and the butterfly valves all move when you twist the throttle (You'll have to hold the vacuum slide open to see the butterfly valve when you do this)?
What about the air filter and airbox, have you checked to make sure nothing is blocking them up?
All the spark plug leads going to the right plugs?

I'm a noob at fixing bikes, so I'm kinda just stabbing in the dark...

I told him that it could be the carb, and he also failed to mention "we" cleaned the plugs.

Butterfly valves? Umm. You wouldn't happen to have a picture would you?

    Plugs

If your plugs are showing signs of being rich ( black ) then they should clean up OK - this is not a two stroke that can oil then up - so dont go buying more plugs...it sounds as if it is too rich - is the choke staying on ? If the bike has been sitting for some time it may have sticky float levels / needls seats .....
Best you pull the carbs and check why it is doing this....oh , and if it was leaking air via the gaskets it would run lean , not rich ...
It is most likely stuck needle seats in the carbs / float levels
Is this bike ex Japan in its recent past - they often have green goo from their fule in the carbs that clog/ block / stick things ....

In the throat of each carb, down after the black plastic throttle slide thing and needle valve (I'm assuming it's the same or similar to the zeal's carbs), there's a round plate thing that moves to let more or less air into the engine when you turn the throttle.
If you're still unsure, search for "butterfly valve" in google in the image section, there are a hole heap of pics of them in all sorts of applications.
It's just a real basic check to make sure your twist grip is actually moving the right bits in the carbs.

I pulled back the black things and twisted the throttle, the butterfly things worked fine. Is that all I am meant to see move? Maybe the bike isn't getting enough petrol?

err? Its not getting enought fuel if the air isnt getting into it, thus runing rich? Unless you have a better idea

Has it got a fuel pump?.

    Are the filters blocked?.

Have you check the carbs for fuel?, should be a drain screw on the bottom.

Do you mean the fuel filter, hmmm. It's not the air filter as the bike still did not run without it.

It worked okish... like ran and was ridable before the carb seals were changed...altho its been atleast a month since it was last started..

I say its because you are just using gasket paper, some gasket glue will be good for it, plus new fuel
