Lost keys -- what now?

I've lost all the keys to one of my beloved rare Italian bikes. What's the cheapest way to sort this out? Going to a locksmith to have him make new keys from nothing? Getting a auto-electrician in to replace the whole switch? Any other suggestions?

What would be a ball-park parts-and-labour-and-GST estimation for all of these options?

Take it to a Locksmith - one that is certified / a member of the national locksmith association NZLA.

I have sent an email to a a KB member who is a locksmith, asking him to give you cost estimates (he is not in your area). You should get a reply from him some time today.

get the number off the ignition and any good locksmith should be able to make it up.

Hi Beeza . Not a good start to a Friday. There may in fact be a key number stamped on the underside of the key switch BUT this is more a jap thing.
Locksmiths make keys to bikes and this is one place to start. To keep the cost down take the ignition lock or the whole bike to the locksmith. Approx $70. For him to come to you is twice the price.
If it is a modern bike with a transponder in key you must take the bike to the dealer.

It's an old 1982 Laverda, and the ignition lock is lurking beneath a sort of plastic-rubbery dashboard fairingy thing, so there's probably quite a bit of taking apart even to get to see any real ignition mechanism with tiny numbers stamped on it. It's going to have to go to a bike shop to get the whole thing taken down enough to be locksmith-friendly. And then put together again.

Is it a big job?

You could try "Safe & Sound Locksmiths" in Feilding. He's mobile, very clever and he's into bikes.
He does travel a bit, so may already head your way. Could be worth a call?
