It will be most interesting to see what will happen if the NZ authorities follow the Australian model of banning gang-patches.

They didn't ban 'gang patches'. They set up a legal structure allowing them to ban nominated 'criminal organisations'.

If an organisation / gang isn't declared to be 'criminal', then its patches and other identifying paraphernalia can be worn until the cows come home.

Presumably any law targeting gangs in NZ would work in a similar fashion.
