I think you were right to hold the deposit no matter what. You were unable to sell the bike until the purchaser had decided. It should cost him $500 for the privilige of deciding "no" and therefore dicking you around.

You say it's on Trademe - yet I have searched under every conceivable search topic and can't find it on there?
Ask you to post a link to the trademe auction - you were on line when I asked, and yet you can't be bothered?
