    BP get plate recognition technology

Just watching the News - apparently BP Stations are installing plate recognition technology to cut the petrol on the pump with a previous drive-off.

God forbid they just bring back the Service in Service stations (I'm looking at you, Gull Henderson Valley)

    Mostly yes!
BP spending a few million on the technology in their 250+ stations around the country, as Mully said about the 'Service'..that money could go a long way towards extra staff. Out of the two servo's we have here, one is the old fashioned forecourt attendants system, the other is re-pay...

I quite like unattended servos...like the Gull here in Norton Road...nobody to try to take over the filling or generally get in the way...and they can't tell you off for leaving your helmet on either...

I can see a time , when, most gas station pumps, will have an Eftpos/prepay option on the pump itself....

Mobil had that. they took it away (apart from fleetcard customers) because:

    A) They couldn't be arsed upgrading the technology to accept smart cards and
    B) They were missing out on revenue from people going into the shop.

Crap 'n' Save does that in Albany. Most of the supermarkets in Pomgolia have it.

    It's for winners.

Who the fuck buys stuff in a petrol station? Fifteen bucks for a tin of pop? Two bars of chocolate for a tenner. I don't fucking think so!!

Watching the news article there was a bloke who had plates or car car stolen some time ago and the system recognised his new plates and associated them with his name then shut the pump down.

My thoughts are where did they get the data from that matched his new plates to his name and the previously stolen plates, think about the implications of this data matching, alright its not quite there but think minority report data correlation you pull up to a BP and all your previous purchases are logged etc the software can market to you, horrible really.
Its not the destination that is important its the journey.

Though the Up side might be you have your car or bike stolen, the tea leaf rocks into a service station it gets flagged, if they do somthing about it is another story.
