So this 19yo guy took advantage of the confusion of the seige so as to steal from and rip off the people affected by it, and get free hotel rooms.
Some people must just be inherently amoral.

He is smart mate, he took advantage of a situation where the Police were very busy indeed. Nothing wrong with that thinking if you are a crook. Pity he did not think of security cameras though eh? Great leveller them things.

Never said you condone it, I just think it's rediculous that you think he's smart because of that. Not a personal attack on you or anything, but how stupid is the average person these days when something like this recognises your intellegence... A smart crook is one who does some high tech ID theft, or something like that, not just thinking "hey, the cops are off doing that, I think I'll go loot a little". Thousands of people do it when there are floods or other national crisis', but I'm pretty sure not every one of those 1000 ppl is above average intellegence

I say bring back public humiliation.
Put him in stocks in the main street of Napier for a week, with a big sign saying what he's done, and let the local victims of his crimes throw rotten fruit at him.
