Interesting. Those numbers are supposed to be tenths of a km from the start of the state highway - starting from Cape Reinga, that would put it south of Kaiwharawhara, according to Google maps. I guess, though, google takes a few short cuts, and there have been road straightening works since the system was calibrated.
Also, my limited research last night suggested the system only covered bridges that were part of the state highway, not the ones that cross it. Obviously I got that wrong.

Yes, that's what I thought too. But it is not that simple. The number is the sum of the nearest reference station identification number plus the distance in kilometres from this reference station to the bridge.
Reference stations are placed at approximately 16 kilometre intervals. There's 1001 of them along SH1 in the North Island.
