Good option not to take this one, it will involve getting a key for locked gates and one of the high passes is closed with snow. Yes, it's nearly 100km shorter to Nelson but is gravel for 100km as well.
Great idea for a roadie, shit I would have waited till spring though, it's bloody cold in the south at the mo', road ice warnings everywhere around top of the south. Have fun boys!

currently couriering a tent to napier is the plan
Might be cheaper just to buy one down there? Warehouse sells cheap tents.

Fuel is available at Tologa, and Tokomaru bays, and in Ruatoria (the pump is up the side of the Supermarket, I think it is a 4 square), also available at Te Araroa, Te Kaha, and (I think) Hicks Bay. Shouldn't be too much drama if you tank up where you can.

The Cape is a great ride and well worth taking a look.
Already looking forward to the ride report

400kms on the first day is 8hrs without stops, you think the aged engines will be able to cope with that?

    brilliant idea!
Then I could get a Kb Tshirt, move to Timaru and become a full time crossdressing faggot
