we'red you ride - doesn't look like Raglan, is it some where south of Pirongia
Lifes Just one big ride - buckle up or hang on
I have been bleating on about ice for the last week, but this morning was something else again...
Went down south central waikato and traversed more patches of white frost than I have ever seen anywhere, including in and around Christchurch many years ago.
Taotaoroa Road was covered in the stuff anywhere the sun had not reached (this is 10am - 11.00am). Arapuni Road from Putaruru to Kihikihi was little better.
'twas a careful ride indeed (and bloody cold too for the first half anyway).
Anyone else have a similar experience?

The top of Waipapa rd right down to the dam... the first steep decline was covered in the white stuff ( low gear & forget the brakes ) the 2nd decline was'nt sooo bad around the dam was ok but , from there through to Managkino you had to watch some corners... Pohipi rd was OK
Lucky to did'nt come with me Mr Koz !!
I Used to jog but the ice cubes kept falling out of my glass

Yes nasty ice hiding there in the shadows!!
Oko hotel was full of bikes and classic cars. great place to be.
This Girl rides her own....
Meet at Kingsgate Hotel Carpark for leaving time 11.00am - bit later than in the summer due to allowing a bit longer for the ice to melt. Cool ride Sunday, welcome to Kerry on his 73 Laverda (beautiful looking bike) and pity your mate was 2 hung over to ride. 5 of us went all the way down the west side of Karapiro onto SH1 then SH29 to Okoroire where every man and their dog and bike and MG or classic car was there (Warren and Claire joined us there). Had a coffee and upto Matamata for a bite to eat (the weather was fine!!!) and Warr led us back through Scotsman vally (I think). A great cruisey ride in mint weather!! C U Wednesday for those coming and I am out for this Sunday (heading to Napier to pick up Milans bike).

Yeah sorry dude, i couldn't get back to the forum before the morning, was a chaotic weekend. It ended up that we had a not-so-familiar rider on a track breed gsxr600 so we didn't go very far past 100km at all and we had to take the main highwaysblack and white ice everywhere around taupo, beautiful ride though! had to stop a few times to pull over and put my hands on the exhaust!
Got a new diablo3 for the rear and it gripped pretty well on the ice. One of the other guys got crossed up in front of mebut pulled it back in so it was sweet, he was shitting kittens. He is a really experienced rider and our speed was pretty low (~30) on a soft right (75k corner) just goes to show that good tires at the right pressures are invaluable!
Taupo track day was cool (car), i was ballast for a few runs, we had an sti that spun a good few circles and just about took us out, was bloody awesome! My mate with the batty decided not to come because he was a little worried about the service condition of his car, and bruising it i think, but my mate with the escort went hard and took on an sti (spinner) and an evo (smoker) and won! (4wd + turbo + huge power + aircon + cd player vs worked 1600 sport '79 escort built for hillclimbs) bloody awesome!![]()

I went basically the same route as you but at about 2pm. There was STILL big patches of frost and black ice. It wasn't so bad out on Arapuni Rd, but Bucklands Rd was fucken nuts... there was an area of tight curves where the ice was so thick I could see the sheen from it. I think it was caused by the frost melting off the shrubs on the bank next to the road in late afternoon when they finally get some sun and flowing onto the road, only to freeze shortly after when the sun goes down. There had been grit laid aswell! I don't think I've ever speed up and slowed down so many times in one ride!

Ckai & I did a recon run down to Awakino via some great back roads yeasterday (1130am - 4pm)..

Awesome roads down that way .. especially Mangatoa Rd & Manganui Rd (would be near perfect if it didn't have 6km of loose stone gravel rd in the beginning of it)
No ice grit on the roads, awesome views, 40km of magic road and we only saw maybe 4 cars going either way.. We would have come back via the back road Paddy showed us (Piopio - Waitomo)but we had to be back early and i was pretty sure they would grit the hell out of those roads
