My ride for this Sunday, Back roads to Piopio, cut across, via Te Mapara to HW4, Kopaki rd, back to TeKuiti, home.
Will do it alone or if anyone wants to tag along, they're welcome. I'll leave Te A Caltex about 9.30.

"Sorry Officer, umm.... my yellow power band got stuck wide open"
I literally just done it an hour a go and i cant remember if it was that one - what i do know is that it wasnt hard compared to the u-turns i was trying to practice. Hardcase, the officer hit the back of me at a give way - tut tut. I just remembered heaps of head checks, mirrors, indication, both feet on the ground at full stops, headlight on.
He was an older guy - he failed someone before coming to me at the 5xroads aa. he didnt seem overly strict. as soon as i felt the bump, first was shock, looked in the mirror and it was him, then had to subdue the anger as if he'd split the rear fender that will be a bit of $ to replace.
I did pass and thanks. I had the tools in the panier bag to get rid of the L plate which I promptly did at the carpark once I got the temp 6R.
See, this actually really annoys me. Even, for example, if the tester thought it was clear to go and was surprised you didn't, number 1 rule is your priority is the car in front. That's really poor form.
Of course I may be blowing it out of proportion but a hits a hit. But it does give a bloody bad example to up and coming drivers if the tester isn't even courteous to fellow road users.
Well done thoughYou're well on your way to being able to legally ride a scream machine haha
Now I had time to rest after taking the afternoon off with the kids to watch the Smurfs (yay) I recall the following:
- Lots of turning, indications, give-ways and one stop sign (put both feet on ground)
- Kids in built up area, no dogs, 1 cyclist (make a point to turn head to watch out for them)
- Tap the side of the helmet to get tester to repeat instructions if the radio is unclear
- Two lane roundabout that proceeded to 80km area after a 30km area of road works (ensure to do 30km)
- Roundabout at 5xroads on return trip to base
- If made mistake, slowly and indicate to pull to the left, head check, indicate right and return to correct path
- 1 U-Turn. Mine was wide and easy but I know of one other person's Uturn test was narrow and I still could not do it without a foot on the road. So I didn't stress about it and moved on to other points of the practice.
- headlight on
- Took about 15mins
Testing Officer:
- Besides lightly tapping my rear fender at the give way, he was non-threatening and friendly
- He didn't take my licence off me - but did sight it. I thought they were suppose to hold it during the test.
- He mentioned I was allowed to do 80km at a certain section of road - this I thought no longer matters due to law change mid last year.
- Pre-ride check indicators, light, wof, reg, lplate, foot brake, hand brake (not horn). I assumed he checked the cc of the bike as the hyogv250 looks much bigger than a gn250, for example.
- He went on before the test about the route - don't freak on this because I lost track of what he was saying and I said that to him.
- Didn't give me feedback unless I asked - maybe he thought because of my age that I didn't give a damn about feedback and just wanted my licence. I actually do care as I want to be better.
The hardest:
- Knowing if my speedo was right but I let the officer know.
Yep, If I/WE get onto SH4 and dont feel like doing the Kopaki loop, we can always just come up 4 to Te Kuiti. Have been told it's all sealed but may have the odd roadworks. I want to do the backroads to Piopio and thru Aria.
Another option could be, from Aria down Totoro rd and hit HW3 just above Mahoenui. My mob is 027 6923454.
If I know for sure, someone wants to tag along, we can leave anytime from 8.30, 10 at the latest.
If I go on my own, I will continue up Oparure rd past Mairoa rd and ride thru Ngapaenga, Waitanguru. Piopio. This stretch has a fair bit of gravel so wont suit most riders. I'll have a couple of maps with me.

I'll be giving it a miss as went for a fairly long ride today, pays to watch out for tractors and trucks on country roads at present as a couple nearly took me out today, coming around corners and taking up all the road.
