So, we have two cards each, both linked to the same account. No additional fees, but Amex gives us rewards points twice as fast. Ideal for us, we can use Amex to get extra points, and Mastercard where Amex isn't accepted.
My 2c
just go to the 2 rewards websites and compare the rewards. Find out which ones best suit you and then pick that card company.
I've got a mastercard and use westpac hot points. Never had any problems with it. Pity it takes soooo long to get enough points for an iPod or anything cool. The bottles of booze are reasonably cheap though.
My bank's credit card rewards system works like this: Pay the minimum amount on time and they won't apply punitive interest penalties or lock you in jail.

I have a Visa and a Mastercard from the National bank which both offer 'cashbacks'. Amounts to 1% (up to 30K spend) of your total year's spend at anniversary of card.
$300 max. more than makes up for the annual account feesHelps to zero the balance each month or what's the point of rewards.
I wouldn't let the rewards points affect your buying decisions (even though it is what they are designed to do). You generally get back less than 0.5% of what you spend and some of the 'so claimed' $20 prizes seem to be available for a lot less at the $2 shop. The credit card companies charge the shop keeper between 2%-5% with Amex being the worst and least accepted. If they accept Amex with no surcharge, they must already be overcharging you.
Oh it doesn't affect my buying decisions but I pay most of my bills via the credit card and a lot of my suppliers accept credit card at no additional charge so I put quite a lot of kiwi peso's through it (wish more of it went straight into my own account :-) ). I got enough hot points this year for about $1000 worth of NZ air dollar thingies which is better than a kick in the teeth.. Just wanted to see if there's a better deal. The cashback thingie sounds good for the first 30 grand tho. And yeah, the retailers gets stung as we get charged about 3.5% on most transactions so like most I offer good incentives for them to pay via any other way.
