    Tyres for trail riding?

For Auckland based trail riding, what tyres do I want?

I have a Scorpion MX on the back which yesterday I had to run at 8psi to get traction at Thundercross. But its a 2012 tyre so presuming its well past its use by.

Golden tyre something on the front which seems to work ok. But also 2012.

I have a Bridgestone X30 MID rear X20 soft front. Not sure I like the front, a X30 might be a better compromise. Good tyres, great price-but CHCH conditions a bit different to Auckalofa?

What dont you like? I had read some not so good stuff on those fronts.

Liking the look of the Geomax, maybe a 32 f and 52 rear.

I think the front felt better and more stable with X30s front and back. They seem great tyres but I am hardly an expert. I would try Motoz tractionators but the Bridgestones are only $200 a set.

I run the Bridgestone XC30 front and rear, work great and seem to last a fair amount of time on the med-hard terrain we're normally riding on

That's what I run. X20 probably better for mud but I rebought the same combination as it's the best compromise I've had in last 20 years.

    Ok here's the big secret.

Buy a Tubliss system for the rear. Couple of rides ago as example. People are flailing about on greasy uphill track that kept on going. I just putt on past them- feet on pegs looking like a Trials god. It wasn't skill.

Been running tubless in the adv bike for ages. Have it in the front of the KDX but not the back as havent needed a tyre change.

What pressure do you run in them?

Generally 10 psi f&r. Trying 12 psi ATM. This is in a pretty rocky environment. Would not hesitate to run lower. Have run 6 psi on my adv 250 on slippery surfaces. With rim locks obv.

4 when it gets muddy. Maybe up to 6 if it looks dry. Never more. But no long road sections on a proper ride.

Interesting, reviews are mixed on TUBELIS. Apparently, more traction, longer tyre life, but sidewall splitting ?

Scaremongering I'd say. We have several in our group. Never seen that.

Of course one could imagine on a heavy bike with zero psi on the road with sustained high speed you could do bad things, but I've seen a tube tyre ruined by running it flat. There's actually pressure at zero psi if compressed as it is still sealed rather than a open go outside hole.

    But for trail riding, sweet.
