    Chateau - Whangamomona - Egmont

    The Toko Lions Club are running a bike ride from the Chateau to Egmont via Whanaga on 27th January 2008.

    Cost is $25.00 if paid by 12th Jan or $30 on day. Proceeds go to the Taranaki Rescue Helicopter. Registration 9:30 at Chateau, departure 10:30. Lite lunch provided at Whanaga.
    When I was young I had nothing, now that I am older I still have most of it left...

    Now you mention it,that's what most of us here call it as well,never gave it much thought before.Usually would say "lets go up the mountain",or "lets go up stratford side or dawson falls".

    When the debate was on about changing the name 20 yrs ago,we(the country)were told that it would be named egmont/taranaki on maps and any listings.

    My view was simple,call the mountain Egmont,and change national park to Taranaki national park,keeps all happy,as mountain was known by most as Egmont,unless you were a born again maori,and even my work colleagues at the time,many who were maori and in lat 50's acknowledged the point,shit the local maori believe the spirits are on the mountain and don't venture far up her.
