Asking price seems to be indexed to inflation, I'm sure 18 to 20 would have secured it previously.

Apart from gash pipes it has no airbox, cut seat, wrong bars and mirrors. Bet it needs a crank/seals from sitting.

Would love it with some money do something with it which would probably be special it but better.
Or std but better.

There seems to be many, many stupid asking prices out there, so it is interesting to see what this achieved.
This one was not mint enough, early enough or just interesting enough to be worth that.

OK so, I'll admit to owning a new metallic brown CB500 new, way back when. I'd disagree with your estimate of the value on all three of your counts. I can't remember but it may have been BIKE magazine, they were recommending buying CB500s over CB750s
A) because they could still be had for less and
B) because the CB500 is a nicer ride.

A quick look around the 'Net tends to confirm my thoughts on the prices

I did check a US site and you could have a low mileage "barn find" CB500 for under US$2000, but when you'd invested all the required time and money it would have cost serious cash.
