Does a bike need a sidestand for a WOF?

Last time I took it in there (VINZ) the sidestand was like at the brink of death, so I asked "Is a sidestand necessary?", and he says "Mumble mumble, well it has to be able to stand up so I can do the inspections mumble mumble."

But the thing is, on the WOF sheet, on the vtnz website I can find absolutely no allusion to bikes requiring a kickstand to get a WOF. So how does this play out in practice, any experiences?

    Hmmmmm mumble mumble.

    Interesting question.

Your intention is to hold the bike upright then while they do the inspection?

I started trolling through this https://vehicleinspection.nzta.govt....of/motorcycles

You may have found a omission - only because who the F turns up on a two wheeler for a WOF without a side stand!

what ever is fitted must be fit for for the intended job. so are you intending on being your own bike stand or using

Interesting! The only thing I can add is that you'd have to take it right off. If the remainder of it was there you'd probably fail. Based on the experience of a woman I used to work with who had removed her fog lamps from her car and then failed the WOF because the fog lamps that should have been there, weren't. Something like that anyway.

if it doesn't work take it off, i know when i had an accesory high brake light in the back window of a car and it didn't work, remove it and it was fine, then try them.

My moped didn't have a sidestand only a centerstand. Then again, it didn't need a warrant.

Some moderrn bikes won't start if the sidestand doesn't work.

Although it seems the very idea is anathema, fix the blood thing.

No, but it does need to be to WoF standard at all times.

i had an old transit ambulance which had a seat in the back, i took the seat out which had the safety belt attached to it, threw it away, the long part of the belt i left in as it was handy to pull up into the van with, they failed a cof with half a belt and no seat....

If the vehicle (Bike) has seating for two, two sets of footrests must be provided.

As for the original "Does a sidestand need to be fitted for a WOF" ... short answer NO. But ... some (most) may simply refuse to do the check due to the impractically of doing the check with no sidestand fitted (as is their right).

This is the bit many don't get ... a blown indicator bulb or brake light on one side would mean a WOF fail.

Thus not up to WOF standard.

Thus liable to be stopped any time of the day or night

A blown bulb at the back of a vehicle often has resulted in a failed roadside breath test (and/or unsafe vehicle charge). Simply because it attracted the attention of a patrolling plod looking for business.
