Well said, think of how much well sorted bike you could get for $6K... and not a dinky 225 cc Scorpio either. Incidentally is it just the photo or does that front disk look badly worn?

I love these but its before my time really. 1971 and disc brake and 750? I thought by then they had the disc and then went to 850 slightly later?

With a stupid extended swing arm .. I dunno why people do that - well, I know they do it because it's supposed to decrease the chance of wheeling - but on a low horsepower bike, non-drag bike, it's just posey and stupid ..

Some rivet counter will no doubt point out 17 non conformance but they are a great looking bike. Looks good value for the coin but would have to be prepared for life with a, I think its called 'character' bike. Read best own a set of well used Whitworth sockets or a man servant to follow in the support vehicle if Sir has to stop at the side of the road for some reason.

Actually two support vehicles as one doesn't want to wait around while the staff load the bike up and do all that mechanical sort of stuff.

my support vehicle (which will come with a pit crew) is my 1973 Porsche Carrera RS. If that breaks down I'll just get them to send the helicopter.

    You Called....
Its not rivet counting, its called attention to detail.
A non matching #'s Commando is a bitza and needs to be priced accordingly.

    Add should read:
Tarted up early 70's Commando with some random engine that seems to go ok.
I'm selling it as is where is as I have never ridden it more than around the block and have absolutely
no faith it could go further.
By adding the word Combat to the add makes it sound better.

I'm on my second Combat and sort of know what I'm on about..

    combat Cam....bigger carbs
google says the engines were all painted black not sure if thats correct though

    COMBAT ENGINE
The big news for the 1972 Norton Commando line was the addition of a new, highly-tuned version of the 750 twin, called the Combat engine. Little did anyone know at the time just how bad this engine was or just how much trouble it would cause Norton.
    COMBAT SPELLS TROUBLE
The 1972 Norton Commando came with an option on the Commando Roadsters & the new Commando Interstate for a 'hotter' engine, called the Combat. All Combat engines came with their cases painted black. The advertised extra 5hp came from a bump in compression ratio to 10.0:1 (by shaving the head surface), larger 32mm Amal 932 Concentric carburetors, larger intake tracts to match & a wild high-lift, long-duration cam. The engine proved to be "peaky", with good power in the upper rpm-range, but not so good in the low- & mid-range. So, they geared it down with a smaller front sprocket to help acceleration. This meant it would top out at 108mph at 7,000 rpm, not exactly what you'd expect from a racing engine. This low gearing made it all to possible to over-rev the engine, even in top gear. The pistons, the same slotted versions used since the Norton Atlas, worked fine at 5,000rpm, but at 7,000 under extreme loads, then tended to pull the crowns loose from their skirts.

SS cams and a 10 min or 10 mile warranty, whatever came first.

32 instead of 30 mm carbs, a 2s cam, and ported ( hacked out) inlet ports.
Easy way to tell is the fin gap is quite a bit less on a genuine Combat and a "C" stamped on the head under the steady.
The head was ruined by the porting, its the cam that made it go better.
Trouble is the valves could/would touch the pistons and back in the day they were thrashed.
Cost Norton a lot in recalls, the unsold ones had to be dismantled, the engines sent back for rebuilding/detuning and then put back together.

They are a nice bike to ride, light and great mid range in licence keeping speeds.
