IT'S touted as the future of airborne firefighting, a modified Boeing 747 that can carry 90,000 litres of fire retardant or water.
The Evergreen Supertanker, easily the largest plane used to fight fire, was put through its paces in front of government officials in California last week.
Evergreen International Aviation said the supertanker represented the next generation in aerial firefighting.
It said the supertanker, developed at a cost of about $50 million, had more than eight times the "drop capability" and twice the speed of any air tanker used to fight US fires.
Australia's air crane helitanker, Elvis, is a midget in comparison with a capacity of 9500 litres of water.
