View Full Version : Wellington - A break in the weather today but...

I try and get out once or twice in the middle of the week for a ride, and share some pictures of some of the region.
No wind, dry roads, and up to Caltex Rimutex, a little bit nippy, topped up the tank, purchased a Subway - Sub Of The Day and headed off for Featherston.
Well the hill was shrouded in cloud and mist, the road was quite wet and several dinner sized plates of oil spilt on the road - I turned around after the second overtaking lane and returned home content to get out the guitar and enjoy yet another coffee and the Subway roll.
Ride Safe
Heads Up and Enjoy

Gidday Merv, you know it's been almost 12mths since we last rode. The winter solstice will be upon us again soon, however I think this year may be a little bit more frosty than the last two years...let's see.
Nice one Dude, Good to see another KB form SV ....
We used to have a small gathering down at the SV Caltex and then head out to a KB gathering point on the weekends.
A little sun this week sure would be nice...
This morning was perfect down here in the Hutt Valley, particularly no wind nor rain - but still the clouds.

G'day Buck - I spotted you up the hill one day just as we were leaving and didn't get a chance to say hello. I was wondering if you folks were coming back over for the Solstice ride - could be a few from this side of the hill join up like last year :)

[Generally a 11am departure from Rimutex then over to the Wairarapa for a loop ride.....and a good country style big bowl of hot soup as a starter at one of the hotels could be the go this year]
I enjoyed the last two years Winter Solstice rides - this year however I will leave that to somebody else to setup in the calendar section if anyone is keen.
New thread anybody......
was thinking about a ride after work but decided to have a tooth pulled instead (unfortunatly not sarcastic:no:) weather forcast pointed to the other coast being the better option, hopfuly better tomorrow, going for a ride rain or shine

Perhaps when the weather is moving into spring and summer, there could be the opportunity for the SV riders to meet up at the Caltex then ride to a KB gathering point...in the meantime through winter I will take heed of the general conditions. There are a few Sunday morning rides through winter posted on the site here.

Thanks for that BMWST. A few of the earlier tags I could recognise pretty quickly, I guess it is a case of getting out early to find the tag location and taking a pic getting back here and posting it.....is that the way to do it?

Stopped at Upper Hutt at Subway - Eat Fresh
Sub of the Day was Ham and I chose Honey Mustard sauce.
A gem of an afternoon, stopping at Kaitoke SH2 for a couple of pictures and also at the last passing lane bend before the summit, finally to stop and 'eat fresh' wasn't too nippy at all.
Four bikes stopped in the 20 minutes I was there and about six carried on round the top.
Rimutaka Hill Cafe - BYO Subway and Can of V.

So Jealous of you Guy. I'm crook as a dog at the moment. Just got a new bike a couple of weeks ago and only been able to ride it three times. Did take it for a small pootle today but didn't want to make the flu worse.
Oh yeah I had a bit of a forced upgrade of the Ducati, I now have a much larger, louder and newer one since we last spoke.

yep thats the way.I also try to get the pic of the next one at the same time, but you risk losing time that way,and you might get home and find someone has posted up their bike before you.I think most have been quite gettable so far,but i have lived here for YEARS so know most places. Its amazing what you can find on Google, esp with Google maps and street view. Its pretty tough at this time of year I leave for work in the dark and its getting dark when i leave work too,so there isnt much time especially the current SH1 tag.I have Fridays off so you will see a lot of my "gets" are fridays!

Hey you take it easy and get over the flu.
I backtracked your threads and read about the 400 Duc - that road out to Staglands is a bit of minefield now and then.

11am-2pm. No 'Buts' today, and no wind. A reasonably sunny day up over the Rimutaka Hill and out on the road to Martinborough, turning off right to Kahutara and a Subway Roll at the Kahutara Hall.
The children at the school across the road climbed onto the fence and cheered when I started up the bike to leave and big waves all round.
Short loop back to Martinborough - Featherston road, with stop at top of Rimutaka Hill and drink of "V", then home.

Though dull and overcast was a good ride up the back of Trentham Camp then up over the Wallaceville Hill out to Mangaroa and over the hill there back down onto State Highway 2.
I did this ride a lot when I started out on my first bike - GN250, and today on the CB900, it was really good to focus on some of the journey. Where I really concentrated and used to get a little tense back then, now I can keep a fairly clear mind and feel 'at one with the bike'.
Out for an hour and a half, and no Subway roll today, had soup before I keft.

Yesterday, after a good 300km ride with Wellington Ulysses up to the Paihiatua Track and back down the Wairarapa - and not a drop of rain (but plenty of mist on top of the Track), I could not let a Wellington blue dome day escape today.
So it was a steady ride up over the Haywards down to Pauahatanui then on up to the Paekakariki Hill Lookout, stopping off at Battle Hill. Bit of a breeze on the way out. The coast line, the South Island and Kapiti Island were bathed in sunshine.

A break in the weather today but....a little bit nippy.
Took a ride up around 2pm and the roading contractors with the truck-sweepers were clearing the grit laid down earlier today.

On the way from Wellington on SH2 to the Rimutaka Hill, there is a good diversion at the Silverstream Bridge then through Silverstream itself and up the Blue Mountains Road to Whitemans Valley. On the way there is an opportunity to stop at the Short Straw Cafe out in the countryside.
Climbing the Blue Mountains Road for about a kilometre this time of year is quite damp and extra care is needed on the closing radius turns. Through the Whitemans Valley the road narrows down and several narrow Give Way bridges.
There are several turn off points back to Upper Hutt, first Wallaceville with a good hill climb and descent, then similarly Mangaroa Hill, and finally to carry on all the way through to Maymourne and come back to SH2 at Te Marua.
Recommend you travel with another rider if you haven't done this journey before.

Midday: a ride up over the Rimutaka Hill down to Featherston and back up to the summit. The riding gear and extra vest kept me warm but the fingers were numb....and this was the general discussion the moment someone arrived 'hands are freezing'.
A good ride with no wind and generally very dry conditions considering the temperatures lately.
Three pictures taken at the bottom of the hill - Wellington side.

I did a few laps up and over the hill today and yeah, that breeze was just to bloody cold to stay standing around at the summit talking.
Noticed some others doing laps up and over as well...cool fun!
Yeh hah! first dry day in ....in...in...bloody weeks. I got a couple of laps in.
Although it was drizzling out Gladstone way.
There were a fair few bikes taking advantage of the break in the weather today and the hill was in good shape.

When I got my Learners licence in 2006, I tasked myself to ride 1000km before I ventured out of Stokes Valley.
I tackled the valley:
1. About 1.5km in from the main roundabout entrance, starting from the main Stokes Valley shops: from this point I took every street on the left off the main Stokes Valley Road continuing on all the way up to the end of the SV road. This is a good and gradual increase in difficulty for slow bike control skills.
2. On the right hand side of the valley, turning right at the few shops which are on your left about 0.5km into the valley, and an immediate right again, this leads you up over the Holborne ridge, good weaving ride ascending and descending with numerous roads to explore there too. Good feature here is appreciating counter steering skill.
3. Finally, the immediate left side of the valley, take the first left at the Caltex service station, only 200metres from the valley entrance. This side of the front of the valley is a very short circuit, however I would recommend that this be left until completing the first two circuits above. This section is quite steep with several bends. From here you could then finish off the rest of the streets to the left off SV road, this will take you into the Glenn area of the valley and there are some good little streets in there too.
For learners and restricted licence riders, Stokes Valley provides a very good 'training ground' enabling you to review your bike control skills.

The ride up the coast or across from the Hutt Valley and up SH1 takes you through the 50km zone at Pukerua Bay: this has a good little beach with road off to the left (about half way along the 50km zone) leading steeply down to the ocean. A good spot for the Subway roll and can of vee. Kapiti Island however was in dense mist this afternoon.
The driftwood on the beach would make for a good watercolour painting.

A blue dome day in Wellington and over the hill today.
On the way over I took note of the water reservoir just past Te Marua at one of the entrances to Kaitoke Regional Park, and stopped there on the way back for a picture.
Over in Featherston there are two hotels and pending what your riding plans are, then a coffee, or snack, or meal, they're worthy of a stop now and again.

This Sunday there is a Ulysses ride to ANZA Motorcycles at Palmerston North but the weather forecast is not looking good. This morning I walked the dog, took the daughter to school, and could not but admire the sunny day and no wind. So a bit of an each way bet 'Guy, ride up today....'
The pictures show:
A wonderfully still inlet on the way across to SH1.
A 'where will you be when you clock 40,000km? Answer: Going through Waikanae."
An excellent cafe in Shannon, particularly if you like a good meat pie, the selection is very very 'country' and a tough choice. Eat and enjoy.
And, the motorcycle dealership in Palmerston North ANZA Motorcycles.
I left at 10am and back home by 2.45pm spending 30-40minutes in Palmerston North.
On the way home I added up my riding distances on the four bikes since May 2006: have just completed 65,000km.
If the weather suddenly changes for the better, could be encouraged to ride up again on Sunday.

Though it was a bit cold this early morning the sun was shining brilliantly on Wellington Harbour and then a ride across to Makara and up to Plimmerton.
To get out to Makara leave Wellington city and carry on out through Karori.
The road will be quite winding in places. You will have only a short ride from the road out to Makara Beach, doubling back to the main road turning right and carrying on to Johnsonville.
From Johnsonville a ride up SH1 past Porirua, and not far, less than a kilometre, from the Shell Service Station at Mana, heading north, you turn off left to Plimmerton.
Today the views across to the South Island were very clear indeed.
[And for those who forgot, Thursday - Subway Sub of The Day - Toasted Ham and Cheese Salad.]
