An ego boost? People to stay with when you go out of town ("but hey, You're on my friend list, you have to let me stay and drink all your piss!")? So you look loved and wanted? Only those people can see your personal details and anything else you specify as being viewable by friends (and mods) only? Nothing?

You can see further information about them and they about you. e.g. contact details etc.

The advantages can be the same as in 'real life'.
I have 70 on my friends list, I know that dont have 70 friends, thats just ludicrous, a big number are 'contacts'. As in 'real life' you know who your real friends are, but having contacts all over the country is the real advantage.
