View Full Version : Sleep paralysis?

Anyone here experienced it before? This morning I didn't see any illusions or heard any sound with it but felt chill like hell. I was able to break out when my whole body started to feel numb and pressure. Mine lasted only about what... 5 seconds but it scared the hell out of me. I've heard many stories lke this before but never really experienced it till now.

No it wasn't a dream. I was wide awake around 5:00am and was about to fall back to sleep. When I was about to fall asleep (the light, comfortable and very cozy feeling), suddenly chill rush overwhelmed like surfing through the blood vessel. Then the whole limb numbs and just solid rock froze. I was able to break out from it because many of my friends (when we shared horror stories when I was young) talked about "sleep paralysis" and I remember someone saying about how to break out from it (try to wiggle your toes and fingers, then with luck, make a movement).

People told me lots about seeing some presence in the room but I wasn't able to see that. Thank God! I'm feeling chill on my back as I type this. I'm not superstitious but this "experience" was very... so real. I am still quite shocked actually.

Ok ok all above may sound very stupid but I'm not mad!

Only happened to me twice, nothing wakes you up quite like the sudden realization of paralysis!

S'not fun sometimes. Especially when you just chose that disgusting alarm tone, and you wanna turn it off. :2guns:

A friend (?!) of mine made a bad estimate of how much weed brownie one should eat at a time, it being his first (and last) time consuming such a substance. He told me he ate four times the recommended dose (upper limit) and suffered `sleep paralysis' for about 3 hours... which felt many times longer due to the time-warping effects of said herb.

Yes, I've had that happen to me a couple of times. Not the chills that you describe but certainly the paralysis. An absolutely horrible feeling being unable to even raise my head and feeling like it weighed 100kgs.

I've had it once where I couldn't move two of my fingers when I woke up, took a few hours before I got feeling back in them, and over a day to get proper movement.

EJ, I suffer from sleep paralysis regularly. I have chronic insomnia/sleep deprivation & other stuff because of it. I haven't slept since Sunday early morning. So that sucks.
One is a symptom of the other.
Panic disorder - hallucinations are quite common. They can seem so real at the time, but they're not.
it is really scarey. But you did the right thing by wiggling toes or fingers - do it as fast as you can. And keep calm, the episode will pass & you will be OK afterwards.
Tell mum & dad if you haven't already. Go talk with your GP & have a check-up, can't hurt even if it just makes you feel better. (No friends of the family, this time)
PM me if you want or we can keep it open here.
I hope I have been of some use.

Not me, but I some times have very real dreams. These are not the usual oh I woke up and was dreaming this or that. They are so real it is hard to tell the difference from a dream to reality for a minute or two. Nothing scary just so bloody real. Strange I tells ya. Mind you it's been along time since I flew..............now that was fun.

From teeth to sleep demons sitting on your chest! :shit: gosh EJ, gotta cut out that fun stuff eh?

There is a ton of info around about the condition, just keep yourself informed and remember that fearing about it will just worsen it!

Take the chill pill and go to bed as normal, losing sleep over this will just drive you into the ground.

I hope not to see any hallucination!

Yes indeed recently I was missing my normal sleeping schedules, and it happened while I was facing up. Tonight will be alright I guess. I mean come on, it's not Freddie Cougar, right? Haha..

Right.

Yep, know what you mean EJ. Have had that a few times happen to me and it's scary at first, but I've found that it has become quite fascinating for me, and so when it has happened,. I've just concentrated on "experimenting" with it...

What I mean is as soon as I realised it was there, I tried different things like concentrating on my breathing to see if it made a difference, tried moving my head, etc

That way, I became more or less back in control of my thought process and not so emotional about it, if you know what I mean.

That way it is not so scary if you treat it as something you are exploring. Relax, and you'll be fine!

Never experienced that little gem, but quite often wake up with a hell of a thud, almost as if I have been dropped onto the bed from a great height. Wakes you up fairly quickly I can tell you. There are a few schools of thought about why this happens.

EJ, I think you just explained why your sleep is being disturbed

"Yes indeed recently I was missing my normal sleeping schedules"

Go with 007XX on this one, dont go all weird about it, play with it and see what happens, above all relax! These things happen from time to time.

I have some pretty odd dreams myself, but mine involve the same two women being in my house. I don't know if I can even call it a "dream" considering I'm awake enough to hear them, can remember everything they say, and often talk back to them. Time for the loopy bin me thinks!

I suffered from sleep paralysis fairly regularly for several years. I can totally relate with the sheer terror that accompanies it.

I used to wake up unable to move and worst of all I WASN'T ABLE TO BREATHE :shit:

I'd do the finger/toe wiggle thing for what seemed like many minutes and finally gasp for breath as I'd regain control of my body.

Apparently it's caused by the natural feature of your brain that paralyses you when you're asleep so you don't act out your dreams. It's the opposite of kicking in your sleep.

In my experience it's usually triggered when you've been screwing with your sleep patterns and are under a lot of stress.

:shit: So it's not the demon or any ghost shit? (Korean superstition).
Well that's problem sorted then. Good night everyone :)

P.S. I heard some people, really rarely, die cause of Sleep Paralysis. Guess it's got to do with the breathing thing.

Hope you're not planning on riding any time soon!

On a serious note, I had a dream a couple of months ago, and it seemed EXTREMELY real at the time, that I woke up in my bed and someone was lying on top of me long ways so they were just resting perfectly inline with my body.

I remember being shit scared cos I knew the person was 'evil' and meant harm to me, but I couldn't move my body properly and couldn't shout so I had to slowly edge my arm out without the person noticing, then right when I was about to do something I woke up in my bed in the same position. I was pleased I was able to move this time though :P

I saw something on TV a while back on sleep paralysis and, like someone else mentioned earlier, it has something to do with the natural 'paralysing' function of the brain when you dream. It was about people who's paralysing thing didn't work properly so everything they did in their dream they acted out in bed.

But was about to start chewing my arm off when she woke up and said "but you are home"

...P.S. I heard some people, really rarely, die cause of Sleep Paralysis. Guess it's got to do with the breathing thing.

I think you'll find that's simply an Old Wife's Tale.

Sleep Paralysis is reasonably uncommon, but not physically harmful. Here's my understanding of what happens:

When you enter R.E.M. sleep ("dream sleep"), your muscular system is usually "paralysed" by your brain, to prevent you from physically acting out your dreams. Sometimes that fails, and you end up shouting, or beating up your poor partner. For most, that's usually when you wake up, making the event fairly short term.

In a few cases, the opposite happens. While it is normal for the paralysis to switch off when you wake, it may not do so.

The important thing is to stay calm, either allow yourself to drift back to sleep if possible, or slowly work to regain movement as mentioned above. REM sleep happens in short bursts, and the paralysis will switch off naturally anyway.

Disrupted sleep patterns can do some weird things, but it's usually short term.

The event might be scary, but don't fear the sandman. Being scared of going to sleep may make the problem worse.

Last night it hit me again. This time when I felt the chill rush over, I just sat back and let it happen.
I don't know how to explain. It felt like an electric shock. After a few seconds it was gone. Then a few minutes later it hit me again. wtf? This is not sleep paralysis I know. It repeated over 5 times.

It felt as if... my back bone was lifting up, shoulder blades moving towards together, then my head pushed back. It felt like a massive electric shock. There was some pain and because of head being pushed back with force, I woke up with sore neck this morning. No I wasn't stretching. But seriously I wasn't trying to do something apart from sleeping!

OK call me crazy. I am crazy. But honestly I don't lie or make up shit. I'm not afraid of it, it's just freaky and annoying!

Maybe it's just another type of a sleep disorder.

Definately not sleep paralysis. Doesn't sound right, I'd get it checked out. You may be having some sort of wierd type of epilepsy and if it is new and you haven't ever had it before then it should be investigated.

On sleep paralysis, I have had it occasionally all my life - wake up unable to move for a minute or two, and thought it happened to everybody until one day a group was talking about it, after seeing something on TV about it, and I realised I was the only one who experienced it.

As many people have said, it's a natural hormone/whatever your brain gives ya so you don't act out your dreams.

There is a condition called narcolepsy (I think???). What happens is the brain randomly gives out this hormone so you end up collapsing because you can't move. You're aware of everything, just paralysed. I saw a documentary on it once...

4th June 2009, 17:08
I would highly recommend talking to your GP. A form of epilepsy is certainly something to consider EJK.

There are many forms and you don't necessarily "convulse". There are Partial Seizures that start in a localized area of the brain. They can differ widely from person to person, but will usually be the same each time for the individual, as the abnormal electrical discharges occur in the same area each time.

Partial seizures can occur at any age, but most often start in adulthood. In some cases the reason is known, in others none can be found.

BUT GO TO YOUR DOCTOR!!!!

best sleep is had when your got paralysis. That is why anesthesia works so well.

I know it was probably scary - but don't fret, if you wake up and still have paralysis it means your body and mind is very relaxed.

I've got a cool documentary on dreams. Covers the sleep paralysis thing and heaps of other cool stuff, like when we dream of doing things we are actually better at them the next time we do them in real life. Also, most of our dreams are unpleasant, and humans may not exist today if we didn't have nightmares.. they prepare you incase you encounter that sort of thing in real life.

If anyone wants it just say and ye shall receive! Or else just search for something like this... BBC.Horizon.2009.Why.Do.We.Dream.WS.PDTV.XviD.MP3. MVGroup.org.avi
