Chanced on this ...
Beer drinkers - any further observations?...
Author: Bruce Holloway
I was amused to read an email from a barman, who after years of research, drew a correlation between Kiwi stereotypes and their attraction to certain beer brands or styles.
Some of them are cruel _ but don't shoot me, I'm only the messenger here. For instance, if you are lacking even an ounce of personality or wear adidas clobber, chances are you drink Heineken.
And those of you who watch too much TV are apparently all Speight's drinkers...... It gets worse.
Poncey gits with slutty girlfriends drink Corona (though sadly there is no hint on what the girlfriends consumed).
People who don't get out much ask for Waikato, but will always settle for Lion Red.
Cardigan-wearers drink Monteith's and middle-class urbanites go for Mac's Gold.
It's Tui or Export Gold for anyone at university, while tourists go for Speight's Old Dark.
The Corona observation was a truly inspired insight, but from my reading, many of the others appeal as marginal propositions at best. So, purely as an antidote to the community excesses of seasonal goodwill, I've compiled my own equally prejudiced list of beer demographics.
* Adolescents too young to get into pubs drink Ice beer. The saddest cases drink Black Ice.
* Used car salesmen drink Heineken.
* Sickness beneficiaries drink Ranfurly Draught.
* Techno-geeks, lawyers and politicians drink Steinlager.
* Rugby league and softball fans drink Lion Red, but would settle for Waikato.
* Gang members and bogans drink Waikato, but would settle for Lion Red.
* Anoraks and trainspotters drink Rheineck, with a touch of lemonade.
* People who go to the supermarket in bare feet drink DB Double Brown.
* Petrolheads with unnecessarily noisy 1300cc cars drink Foster's.
* Pipe smokers and men with greying beards drink Guinness.
* People trying really hard to impress drink Stella Artois
* Less astute people trying really hard to impress drink Flame beer.
* Farmers, and people who don't know any better, drink DB Draught or Lion Brown.
* Tomboys drink Export Gold, usually straight from the bottle.
* People who don't like the taste of beer drink Monteith's Summer Ale.
* Women who are "up for it" drink Crown lager.
* Radio Pacific listeners drink anything, as long as it comes in a flagon.
* Bargain hunters drink Tuborg.
* Eden Park cricket fans drink Export Gold because they have no bloody choice.
* Journalists drink anything if it's free.
* Does anyone drink Mac's Gold?

And the really fun part? In blind testing, so-called beer aficionados can't tell the difference! If you let them see what's in the glass they can generally pick the difference between a black beer, lager and brown beer but that's about as good as it gets. I have run several beer tasting events at social club dos over the years and have yet to find a beer drinker who can "beat the monkey", statistically speaking. Conclusion: People who claim to be able to discern between Lion Red, Brown, DB Draught, Tui, Speights, Waikato wouldn't have a fucking clue what they were drinking unless they poured it from a branded container. Most can't pick Stella from Lion Brown. Sad but true...

and my wife isn't big on beer so that's why she drinks Summer Ale of a warm evening :niceone:
Hitcher, you are talking cobblers (a somewhat rare event perhaps) when it comes to being unable to discern different types of ale "blind" as it were. As a good Waikato lad, I avoid our regional ale like the plague. I don't even need to smell or taste it as there is incontovertible evidence about 20 minutes later. I don't think that I need go further other than to say that you wouldn't enjoy the proof that I can tell when I've ingested the stuff.
Anyway, I much prefer a good Merlot or Shiraz - typical nancy Honda owner... :2thumbsup

What?

I don't watch much TV, so I must be confused when I drink Speights.
Getting worried coz I quite like Monty's Summer ale.
But my fave (Hoegaarden) isn't on the list, so maybe I really am the sterotypical BMW owner... :scooter:
(can't understand why anyone would want to drink locally made Heineken - it is nothing like the real thing) :spudwhat:

Do agree with most students drinking tui but only seen chicks drinking export. Think speights needs to get added to that list for the southern students. Thats what i go for if i am paying or steinlager if its free.

Home brew! that reminds me, my brother's got a home brew set and I was goign to ask him about it.
Just finished a couple of Resch Bitters because they were on special at the bottle shop. I'm a student, I'd drink Tui or Export gold, really I'm not fussy. I used to favour Speights Old Dark, but have decided it's too expensive.

Back in the old days when I was learning to drink the stuff, a skill I applied myself to with the utmost devotion, it all tasted pretty much the same, being designed to pour down your throat as quickly as possible, sometimes not staying there very long at all. Now the beer barons and importers have taken note of the popularity of the small independent producers of fine ales and have started producing some decent brews. What beer I drink depends on the circumstances - nothing beats a Corona on a hot sunny day sitting in an outdoor cafe after a ride on the bike, but on a cold wintery night I'll go for a Guinness at my local "Irish" pub. Horses for courses just like bikes

I reckon the most successful thread is the one that starts as beer, cos then you can't hijack it to be about beer.. and nothing else matters, apart from bikes, but we have a whole website/forum dedicated to that..
anyhoo, as for my fav, I can never remember. I try a few, find the one I like, then get drunk on it, wake up the next day and can't remember which one it was! Must get round to writing it down next time I figure it out. Never been a huge fan of beer anyway, but it goes down the hatch..

Some of those stereotypes are very true, and quite hilarious - the Corona one, for instance. A lot of them don't really ring any bells for me, though.
I second all the remarks about not being able to tell the difference between lagers.
I drink Guinness when I'm somewhere that has it on tap, I drink whatever lager I can get when I feel like lager, and I go to bed every night dreaming of a pint of Grafton Porter at Galbraiths.
I've been buying Mac's Blonde recently, too. I'm pretty sure I could tell the difference between wheat beer and lager in a blind tasting.

Well beer that I'd drink if I could afford it: Grolsch, Amstel, Heineken (do you see a trend here?), stella, montieths.
What I actually drink: Any beer (even VB, CD if its free), home brew.
What I buy: Speights, export (whatevers on sale at countdown), montieths. I'm going off speights now though it just starting to taste worse and worse. Try a speights or CD after a homebrew and its hideous!

I will drink almost any beer,I seldom buy the same in a row, always go for something a little different, never ever Lion Red or DB Bitter.I stay away from ''girl'' beers like Export and Ice....I like lagers, darks, reds, pilsners, all the good stuff.A truly different beer I could pick out in a blind test is Mikes Mild Ale from the Urenui Brewry,it's the brew that farm workers were supplied with as part of their lunch 200 yrs ago - I feel like I'm drinking something good for me when I drink that.....I get a funny look from my missus when I say that though...

I seem to recall that Mr Graeme Crosby identified something like 20 beers in a blind taste test years ago. Not just local ones either. Truly talented.

Too many JRs on this forum, but just in case you're asking me, I'm sure it's just fine and dandy. If you're worried about its fitness for consumption, you're welcome to swing by my place and share the pain...
A colleague just got back from the UK with a catalogue from a whisky shop in London. The most expensive thing in it was a bottle of Glenfiddich from 1937, going for £11,000.
I also noted that prices on the more pedestrian malts that I drink regularly were rather better than what we pay here at the current exchange rate, particularly for the Islay stuff. Laphroaig *should* be about NZD50-60 a bottle, but you can't find it anywhere for under $110, usually. No idea why.

Birds Liquorsave sold Black Baron for a while, to me, lots, after they dropped the price to induce sales. It was a dark lager and yes, there is such a thing. Current fav is Leffe, available in blonde and dark. Get it from Foodtown or Countdown when it's on special, I doubt you'll be disappointed. Yum.
