Well I have been waiting a while to be able to type up this update but I am super stoked the day has come. I have now had my first day back on the bike here in America and it went great. The fourth round of the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship is this weekend and its looking very likely that I will be racing. Since my last update I have had an up and down time with my recovery but all in all it went great and really quickly. I have been attending the first three rounds of the National series and have definitely been learning a lot.
The follow up appointment with Dr. Reimann went awesome and everything in my shoulder was where it was supposed to be. This has been by far the best recovery I have had from an injury over my career, having a surgeon that knows the ins and outs of our profession definitely made a difference.
Last week we left California and headed east, stopping at Texas for round three of the championship. We have now made it all the way across to Poland, Ohio which will be our home base for the next month. It worked out great that Justin McDonald has a friend in the industry who lives here and was happy to put us up so big thanks to him. From when we left California until now we have travelled a total of over 3000 miles/5000kms, let me tell you New Zealand is a pimple on the map in terms of size compared to America!
At this stage the plan of attack for the rest of the trip is to race High Point National round 4 this weekend, the following round is back on the opposite side of the country in Colorado so at this stage I don't think we will make it to that race as we simply can not afford to make it that far. We then have a weekend off and then there will be three rounds of the championship in a row so fingers crossed we can do all of those, I am especially looking forward to racing at the famous Red Bud track in a few weeks. We will be heading home at the very end of July unless we can find some support between now and then so everyone cross your fingers for me to get some solid results!
I look forward to sending out another update next week which will cover my first race in America. Obviously I am a bit down on bike fitness after my time off but i'm staying positive and if nothing else it will get my experience level up for sure.
Until next time,
Luke Burkhart
